Ok

Looking for some cultural music, everytime i search on internet for NZ music i get rap bands and rock/pop bands from NZ.

I tell you what i am looking for, have you seen the Air New Zealand advert "amazing journeys" (very clever powerful ad btw) the music and subtle singing on that advert make the hairs on the back of my neck twinge. I assume its of maori origin but of course thats just an assumption.

If anyone has any ideas what CDs etc to look out for.. For those moments when one needs to just chill-out and remember why i came to thsi peaceful place :nice1

EDIT: This advert and music - - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qOHTbd_yhA

Most people find once is enough when they have a sample of my music collection (including the missus).

I have what I like to describe as 'eclectic' tastes. Others may use harsher words, but they just make me cry....

I love that too.

There was a programme on recently about the making of this advert was it on Close Up? It showed the singer and the making of it. Hmmmmm....

Oh found this deep in the air nz site;

The original music was scored by Jim Hall of Auckland based Soundtrax and New Zealand singer Jayne Elleson, chosen for her haunting voice, provides the vocals. To capture the emotion of the stories Maori phrases that talk of reconnecting with loved ones and places make up the lyrics.

Hope that gives you an idea of what to look out for in Sounds. :D

The music for that ad was composed especially, as Smiler said. It's only about a minute long.

Have you tried listening to stuff like Breaks Coop? They're a Kiwi band, but very chilled out sitting in the sun type stuff.

I don't know any Maori music personally, other than the things everyone sings at the Marae. (and at home, at the beach - my Whanau sing all the time!) I could ask them for some advice about what sort of thing to look out for if you'd like?

You could try "Maori Songs of New Zealand" by Aotea Maori Chorale (http://www.cdkiwi.com/maorimusic.htm) . It has Pokarekare Ana on it, which is lovely.

My husband bought this CD: Nature's Best before our wedding - I don't think it's exactly what you're looking for, but it has a good selection of Kiwi artists on it (so I'm told - I'm not exactly an expert on Kiwi music. In fact I was surprised they could find 100 best songs... :D ) and could be a good starting point.

Patea Maori Club is another one to look out for. You can see and hear Poi E here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQLUygS0IAQ

I can recommend Our Land Our Music (http://maorimusic.com/catalog/product_info.php?ref=12&products_id=159&affiliate_banner_id=1) Vol I and II This gives you a wide overview of all sorts of NZ music.

Cheers

Great question!

My fave is Te Vaka (http://www.tevaka.com/). The CD I love best is "Tutuki." They have a new one out that I haven't heard yet because I cannot find it in stores here! I don't understand that because they are such wonderful NZ artists.

Most of the stores seem to carry lots of boring US music, which I've heard plenty of my whole life. I want more of the pacific island/oceana type music, but where is it?? I don't know if I'm just not sure where to look or if NZ artists just don't get dibs on shelf space. Makes no sense to me

Anyway, Te Vaka is fabulous, and it you want to hear what they sound like, click on "Music" on their site; you can see each of the albums and listen to a sample of the music. I ordered CD's from their site before and they send them out really fast. It's such feel good music...I love it!

Cheers,
Christine
