Has anyone ever flown long haul with Cathay Pacific and what were their experiences with them ?
I have looked through the airline recommendation thread and notice it didn't get a high rating in the poll, but guess it could just be that Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines are more popular.
Me and OH are going to UK next year and had a few quotes and Cathay Pacific has been the cheapest by far.
I have always flown with Air New Zealand and found them second to none, but we are on a budget and if I can save on flights to give us more spending money all the better !!
So....come on guys ~! Cathay Pacific ? Good or crap !!

I've flown with Cathay Pacific from Heathrow to Sydney twice. The last time was at the beginning of 2003. I found them to be absolutely fine - no problems at all. The meals were good, the service was good, and they let me change my return flight (twice!) without charging me anything at all even though my ticket wasn't a flexible one. Hong Kong is a nice airport to transit through as well.

Flown with them quite a lot and think they're very good. The business class isn't as good as BA, but economy ranks as high as anything I've flown. Last time I flew with them was Oct 2005. I personally put them above Air NZ and Singapore through my own experiences.

We came over with them last month and they were fine - nothing special, but they got us in on time without the wings falling off and there is plenty of drink and food (including snacks you can help yourself to in the galley whenever you want. Hong Kong was a great transit - we were only there nine hours but got out into the city on the fast train and had a decent look around without having to hump our luggage anywhere. Perfectly adequate on a budget.

I have flown with them too, they are fine, hong kong airport is good only criticism is that the ground staff were a bit abrubt when getting you into queues for boarding.

I flew with them to Aus when my children were younger and the airline were great.
Would not hesitate to fly with them.

Not as good as Singapore Airlines imho. Family and self felt more cramped in the Cathay seats and the overall experience was a step down from Singapore Airlines. Hong Kong airport was very pleasant, but then Singapore airport is too.

Well, their leg room is not that great an I am only 5'8", specially in the A330's. I found Thai and Singapore to be better. Cathay's service is very good, no complains there!! Rest, you need to know whats important to u and decide!

... I found them expensive whilst searching for flights for our April 'recce' trip this year... we ended up booking with Singapore Airlines, far cheaper :)

I've always found Air NZ to be the cheapest, but then again I only ever book with them during their sales.
Many thanks to benandclare for reminding me about the SeatGuru site. It also prompted me to phone Air NZ and request our favourite seats for the trip in June.
