Hello,

we've bought a vehicle prior to arriving. yes. i know, but it's a really really great van. Apparently we need to show a New Zealand driving license to get an ownership certificate. I find this hard to believe, but anyway, we haven't got one. anyone got useful advice? I know all you migrants didn't have NZ licenses when you bought your first car.....how'd you do it?

thanks

We just showed our UK ones and that was fine. the garage actually had to take them to the licensing place as it was the first time we had registered a car in NZ. When we got a 2nd car we just showed them to the garage and that was fine.

That's a new one on me! Who told you that?

When we registered our car we showed our UK Passports and licenses. But that was for a new registration.

Check here http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/vehicle-ownership/dont-get-stung.html there's lots of useful info on vehicle ownership and you can do it all online too.

You are allowed to own and drive a vehicle for 12 months. Then you have to do a NZ drivers license. Even backpackers buy cars for 9 or so month and travel through New Zealand.

thanks everybody for this info. i think it was the seller who said about the license, but it does say, all over the Land Transport web-site 'nz license'. We'll just put our own numbers in off the UK one, and hope for the best. As long as they get the money, they'll probably be happy eh? that's the second time this forum has been really really useful. and I've only used it twice! thanks.

Is there some other information we need in order to do this? THe form seems very exact in what it demands? thanks

:cheers Okay, having spoken to the Land Transport people, they were very nice and we can do it all when we get there in person. You can't do it online with any driving license but an NZ one (for info) but it's no big deal.

I had a weird one this week actually, i am buying a car this weekend (yup more debt!) and when i called state to arrange insurance for the car i was asked about my license etc. Upon telling her that mine was a UK license she replied "oh so in NZ that classes as a Restricted License only, you do know that dont you? My computer screen confirms that".

I went on to say that actually it was fine to drive on a UK license for 12mths and it is same as a Full license. She still said "No sir its by law only equivalent to a restricted license i can assure you, but we can still insure you today"

So there you go, according to State computer screen we can only drive "Restricted" same as a learner etc! LOL thank god i know she was wrong!
