I know many want to know how much it'll cost to take their pets to the vet so thought I'd post these figures... unfortunately Amber has a small tumor on her face that has to be removed :( (benign, that's the main thing).

Costs involved:

Initial consultation at vet with biopsy and anti-b's - $55
Operation to remove lump in one piece under anaesthetic with 1 day stay at vet and few days pain relief - $260
Optional fee to have lump sent for labwork - $130

Hope Amber feels better soon :(

I've got an invoice for a vet as well, for my cat:

standard consultation: 49.50 dollars
General surgery (removal of fatty lump under anaesthesia): 48.40 dollars for surgery and 50 dollars for anaesthesia
Ultrasonic dentistry with minor extractions: 42.20 dollars

Poor Amber, (and a poor worried mummy)

Lucky is feeling for her at the moment, he had to have 4 teeth out (face selled up due to infections), total came out to $500...... consult fee $45 cant remember what all the rest was, but surgery time, anaestetic, antibiotics, blood tests..... she even "forgot" to charge me for a couple of injections! He also had a ten day course of antibiotics inc in that price.

OK, Olive climbed our rose trellis and cut her pads: vet had to cut off damaged pads and treat wounds @ standard visit fee of $45.
My friend's two labs both needed overnight treatment through eating some kind of poison (never found out what it was) and it came to a shade below $1,000.
Result: Pet'n'Sure dog insurance @ $30 per month. We had it in UK and really found it useful for our dear old Macy.

Awww, poor pooches and pusses... hope they're all feeling better soon ...

Sods law applies here Gil - Summer is insured but we hadn't got round to doing Amber yet :roll - agree, pet insurance is sooo worth it. Haven't found as much choice here as in UK though...

"Nil-by-mouth Amber" should be up and bounding around by Saturday :)

Howie ate some fishing line. Trip to after hours clinic on labour day: $100.
Trip to regular vet the next day including X-Ray to discover fish hook: $150
Trip to friends vet for second opinion: $50
Back to regular vet the following day for pre-surgery blood work + x-ray to discover the hook had almost past + days observation at vet to insure hook passed: $200

All up $500 to find out that my dog successfully passed a fish hook and line on his own. Still a better outcome than having it surgically removed.

How on earth are you managing to keep her away from Summer's food?

At least she is nil by mouth, Lucky had a recovery diet of cubed meat (so it was soft on his mouth and didnt get into his open gums)..... hubby was most miffed to see me frying up a BBQ steak for the dog of a morning, as he was eating his cereal ready to go to work!

in fact having to feed the dog proper meat for a few days probably added at least another $50 to the bill!

our dog is too old to insure now... and if you dont count his airfare he has been very cheap actually... (just jinxed myself there haven't I?)

and much better than the hook piercing your dog's GI tract and having the contents of it leak in to the body cavity.

Hope Amber's feeling better soon - the skin is so thin on the face too.

I have found that colloidal silver sprayed onto my dog's wounds really helps the healing without having to touch it. This was recommended to me by doggy forum people and I think lots of them use it. I have no idea how much it would cost in NZ but here in the UK it's about £25 a bottle (lasts ages).

The silver came out last week when the daft dog ran into something in the dark and punctured his shoulder. The vet's bill was £105 for a visit, wound cleaned a bit, antibiotic jab and 4 days tablets - with a follow up 20 second look a few days later.

Luckily I have pet insurance for him - he cost over £1500 last year in silly accidents - bit of a clumsy oaf - but this year they removed my no-excess part of the policy (wonder why?) and I have to pay the first £50 now.
It's still worth it though - the insurance company'll never make their money back on him - he won't live long enough!!!

Oww its awful when they get sick.

I have a dog who has to go regularly, the vet is really sweet and only charges me about $25 for a visit. If she is worried and wants to re-test between regular visits its $15. That includes a blood test that’s done on site. Some of the visits do cost about $250 but most of that is for drugs.

Well, they managed to get the lump out from inside her jaw to prevent any outward scarring, which was great of them.

But, we've had bad news from vet in that the lump was a lymph node and it looks like she has some form of cancer, at least in early stages. The lab hadn't seen anything like it before :( and are confuddled.

Just waiting now for some news.... maybe some finger-crossing would help?

And on the topic of vet fees - $90 for Olive to be sedated, examined and injected with painkillers. We thought she might have been hit by a car as she was dragging one of her back legs around, but turns out that she was probably kicked by one of the horses that are using our paddocks and keeping the grass down.

Anyway not broken, just bad muscle damage, and I don't know what the vet gave her, but she's been charging round like a kitten and not even a limp. I reckon I could do with some of that..:laugh

Lets hope Amber makes a miracle recovery also..

Ah, I'm glad I found this thread again. One of my cats is at the vets right now and has just had to have 4 teeth extracted, poor little mite. I'm worried sick right now as the vet thinks it is very unusual for such a young cat to have such bad teeth and gingivitis - she thinks it could be a sign of FIV so we are waiting for the results. Hopefully, he won't have it - fingers' crossed.

dilanium

Anyay, the fees were $288 for him to be examined, have a general anaesthetic, 4 teeth extracted, his other teeth to be cleaned, anti-inflammatory injection, and for the blood test.

We get the results tomorrow.

Jo Jo
7th December 2007, 09:33 AM

We had our Tess (13yr old border collie) gone through some surgery because of a hard marble sized lump under her throat. At the same time we also had the vet check out a big fatty lump on her shoulder she had had for years. Our vet 'back in the old NL' always said it was harmless but after it was removed (400 gr) she moves much better and easier it seems.

Us too, we're 400 dollars lighter :)

p.s. both lumps were harmless, *sigh of relief*

My puppy got hit in the eye with a toy, and it swelled up and looked quite sore, so we took him to the vet today. It cost $85 for a very thorough eye exam, eyedrops and anti-inflammatory pills.

I think I may have quite a lot to add to this thread over the next few months!

sizzlingbadger
21st February 2008, 03:01 PM
We've been through a really rough patch with one of our whippets.

Took him to the vets with white gums (very bad sign for a dog). Vet thought it was rat poisoning so a course of vitamin k. Not bad as that was $75. A week later he was getting worse so back to the vets for a blood test, $150 and more drugs (not sure what cost). Then another week later another blood test, back later in the week for an urgent blood transfusion (not as much as you might think $30 + the vet's time which we're not sure what that will be).

So running total is probably around $400 mark, ouch hurts when you add it up :( We're not sure what it was but he's on the mend now and finally has pink gums about a month after it all started :raebanana

Oh and for anyone with alpacas we had two castrated by the vet, call out fee and drugs for two was $190, not bad as we had been quoted $380 for 1 alpaca :o

My cat got knocked over by a car last night. Vet fees are currently at $2000 and rising as I type.
He's been on oxygen constantly since being admitted to the vet hospital, a drip, very strong painkillers and has had three lots of x-rays, a MRi scan and is still being monitored to ensure his lung function is ok.
(Apparantly cats can bleed into their lungs after suffering a trauma in the area and it doesn't show up for some time.)

Quick visit to the vet to recheck Howie's dry nose and goopy eye (he seems to have some skin problem going on - so I'm sure many more visits are in store). Visit + antibiotics for nose + steroid gel for eye = $90

Well worth it as I have the BEST vet.

To register my two here in NZ I had to get UK Kennel Club Export pedigrees. Because Duke is a dog (in the gender sense) I had to get a vet here to confirm on the form that he had two apparently normal dangly bits! She thought it was hilarious and did it for free! Duke was only mildly amused though.

Although we are in the UK I thought I would post on this thread as it relates a little to NZ. Recently our older dog (he is 7) began limping. He had no damage to his pds that we could see. As they often pull a muscle we rested him for a few days but he still limped. We eventually took him to the vet who wanted to x-ray him. After his x-rays (cost £120) we were told he had arthritis in his elbow - possibly caused by ligament damage and they gave him a 10 day course of anti-inflammatories. We took him back yesterday for a follow up. The drugs seemed to have helped him as he walks a little better and doesn't yelp when he stands. They have given him a further course of anti -inflammatories and said he would need these for life - they are called Rimadyl and cost just over £100 for 100 tablets. As he will be on these for the rest of his life does any one have any idea how much they would cost in NZ? It doesn't matter how much they do cost as he needs them but it is just another cost to factor into our budget.
