So what does everyone do here on Bonfire night? The Warehouse is supposed to be chock full of fireworks this weekend....in UK they were getting harder and harder to get hold of?
Are there any big firework displays/bonfires or is it more of a back garden thing over here?

I think there are plenty of public displays - I can't help with Auckland, but our town is having a display on the beach - can't wait!

The chief executive of the fire service in NZ is calling for a ban of the sale of fireworks to the public.

there is a display at alexandra park for certain, you can buy them from today, I think until the 5th and thats it.

They have already started going off round here, dog is shaking in his fur already, I am not looking forward to friday/saturday as both our neighbours let of loads the last couple of years and had parties til late.... right outside our bloomin bedroom window! (mind you they dont do it often, real quiet mostly)

I would love to go to a display, but cant as we know how scared the dog gets and we cant leave him alone.

Just realised how old that story is, but one of our local papers said the campaign to ban the sale of fireworks to the public is still ongoing.

The only display I've heard of in Auckland is this one http://www.viewauckland.co.nz/info_whats_on_128690.html But I'm sure there will be others around. Don't think we'll be going though as with it not getting dark until late most of the displays won't start until well after our sons bedtime.

Bummer! Guy Fawkes night was one of my favourite nights in the UK.

I was amazed to find out that guy fawkes in even an event over here! Its an old english tradition, why the hell does NZ celebrate it? LOL

Not that i am complaining i am afraid unlike many i am a huge fan of having a good party with some fireworks, even more so as i worked in the ents business and was involved in some outdoor fireworks proms events many times. Back in UK friends and family we used to have 4-5 firework parties throughout the year as there easy to get all year round in the UK, sadly that doesnt seem the case here :(

Seems draconian to me to only allow there sale and use for 3 days, and i realise i am probably in the minority here, so sorry for that. I will have to enjoy what fireworks i can for the next couple of days.

A lot of kiwis ask the same question.

Sale is limited, but there are no restrictions on use. After last 5 November, people in our neighbourhood were setting fireworks off every weekend for months until they finally ran out. :no

Think who the majority of colonists and settlers have been. Also the head of state still lives half a planet away!

It's Brighton Pier for the Chch mob - :nice1 http://www.bethere.co.nz/ShowEvent.aspx?Id=11818

Join Christchurch for an evening of beach side fireworks off the New Brighton pier.

The annual spectacular will be more special this year with the addition of the pier lighting system in June adding a new dimension to the lighting and fireworks show.

Come down early and have a picnic with the family or enjoy the rides and carnival atmosphere on the beachfront. Bring your radio as the display will be timed to music and simulcast on The Breeze 94.5

For easy parking the Rawhiti domain will be open and offering free parking only a short walk from the beach. Metro will also be running bus services to New Brighton and back, visit www.metroinfo.org.nz.

9pm Lighting show on the pier
9:10pm Fireworks

The Herald has a listing of displays around Auckland:

Last year we walked to the top of Mt Eden (the gate will be closed early so don't try to drive up) to watch the Alexandra Park display and all the fireworks going off across the city.

I know what you mean. I love fireworks....but not all night long, waking the kids up. Our neighbour was throwing lit fireworks into the street with his kids....no wonder there are so many accidents and injuries every year. Another neighbour has spend the last few evenings throwing these banger things into the street too :(
