OK, are there scrapyards here where we can take our annoying exploding washing machine to, or is there some sort of rubbish collection service I should be aware of but don't know about?

Not sure about where you are by North Shore City Council do 'non-organic rubbish' collection days. Specific streets on specific days but is not very often, certainly not weekly.
My OH wondered what on earth was going on the first time it happened here as all this junk/rubbish started appearing outside people's houses! Its also perfectly legal for anyone to go through it and take stuff away if they want it prior to the collection trucks coming round.

This looks like you best bed, take it to the tip, but you need to pay.
It would probably normally languish at the back of your garage until the next inorganic rubbish collection, but you dont really want to move it to your new house.... and wait till next year to get rid of it for free.

Could you please post how much they charge you to dump your washing machine, I also have one I need to get rid of. Also noted that they advertise free fire wood for collection during the winter.
Worth remembering.

Right, Debbie...We got stuff collected in the end as less hassle than trying to fit stuff in back of car. Here are details:
0508 any junk
Phone 0508 269 586
The guy turned up and took old washing machine, seeral other small broken electrical items, old lampshades and a large load of that white styrofoam packaging and boxes and old shoe rack. He looked at volume of it all and said $125.....but haggled and paid him more like $90. Probably could have got away with paying less, but didn't have smaller notes to haggle more.

Doesn't it break your heart to see what they DON'T recycle here? We had a place in our town in Victoria where you could take styrofoam for recycling and then we found a glass blowing place that would accept all styrofoam bubbles and flat sheets of polystyrene for their packaging so all our neighbours got together and we did took a collection of it to them every month or so.
Glad to see they are finally getting into the biodegradable plastic bags though.

Jeez $90! I took ours to the tip along with a load of other stuff - fitted in the back of the car (Estima) and was grand total of $7 for the lot!
They recycle quite a bit of it too - especially electrical stuff - Trash Palace (http://www.trashpalace.co.nz)in Porirua being a good example!!

Strange, Wellington seems to recycle a lot of things. For example Poly Palace (http://www.trashpalace.co.nz/index.cfm/poly_palace) (an independent business of trash palace posted previously) which converts polystrene into underfloor insulation.

Despite having a big car...we couldn't get our enormous old, leaky washing machine in back, without risk of damage to inside of car. Agree...alot of money, but when you are about to move house you don't want more hassle.
