I'd just like to say if you;re considering coming to New Zealand, please dont come to Nelson.
Its an awful place, full of bad people and louts who would kill you at a second glance.
The food is terrible and the sea is polluted. The air quality really sucks !
Its overgrown with weeds and the beach is full of dog muck and germans.
:cheers
LOL !!!
well, maybe thats not entirely true, but the more poms that come here force up the house prices, so if you're a loaded londoner, then I would stick to Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch.
At least until the house prices drop enough to allow us to buy a damn house !! :laugh

OH was working in Nelson for about six month two years ago and his boss used to pay for me and our daughter to fly up every other weekend. Its a great place.

On a serious note - housing stock round ( rentals especially ) here are very limited at present.
My one big piece of advice for anyone emigrating from the city is this -
Scout New Zealand out first before you come.
We're glad to say thats what we did before finally settling on Nelson. However, as it may be a great place to live, its not for everyone. We've known MANY english people who arrive here and after just a few months decide its not for them, invariably heading to one of the 3 main centres.
There are plenty of reasons too - shopping facilities, nightlife ( or lack of ), no theatres, entertainment complexes ( although the cinema is good :) )
It just lacks a lot of things that people in the UK come to expect.
From my point of view, Im glad of that, it more than makes up for it in other areas.
I must admit, I'm often really surprised that people emigrate to NZ never having been here before. It really is worth the extra time and money to visit first and find the place that really clicks with you.

The people that wrote the book Emigrate With Caution went to Nelson. If I remember rightly he was a superyacht designer, and seemed surprised to find no large boatbuilding firms in the area. :roll
It is certainly a lovely place, with the highest sunshine hours of anywhere in the country. The property there is dreadfully expensive cos the council has made it difficult and expensive to subdivide. Until they relax the rules and allow new people to move into the area you won't see things like good shops and entertainment (even the Wearable Arts event moved away). I suppose it keeps the area exclusive for the literati from Wellington.

judging by the current population of Nelson, my little joke did'nt put anyone off from coming here ! ( as if it would ).
Seriously though, anyone coming to Nelson, be very careful. Rental stock is at an all time low and house prices are very high.
I would advise anyone wanting to come here to scout it out first.
Failing that, wait for another few years until the propsed expansion of Richmond takes hold in the next few years. From a little 10,000 population town they're planning on building enough industy and housing for it to eventually be bigger than Nelson ( in around 20 years time ).
Richmond is about 10ks out of Nelson

Funny you should say that. The title reverts back to Blenheim (http://www.stuff.co.nz/marlboroughexpress/4342917a6008.html)

Yes looking at map and recalling what we saw, Nelson area can only expand one way, ie Richmond. Our fear is that in a few, say 10 yrs time, Nelson itself will become grid locked. Am I right in thinking there is only the one road out to the west? Surely that will become a traffic night-mare if Richmond expands alot?
Would you say there is not much turn-over of houses in Nelson, certainly looking on-line for family properties there aren't many to choose from.
We're attracted by the schools as much as the sun and location, certainly the College for girls appears to have an excellent reputation ? Any locals agree?

This has been a big local issue for a while. Over the winter, you couldn't move for "Option 1" or "Option 2" talk. Basically, the problem is congestion along the coastal road linking Richmond and Nelson. Part of it goes along Rocks Road, which is otherwise a very pretty place with incredible views on a clear day (and there are lots of those). It makes Tahunanui fairly undesirable during rush hour.
They were talking about various ideas for easing congestion, I don't remember what they were but anyway, it's now irrelevant as Tasman District Council pulled out, making it unfeasible (Nelson and Richmond are separate districts).
Who knows what will happen next. If you believe a certain contributor to the Nelson Mail, then in 5 years time "Peak Oil" will mean that no one will be able to afford to drive and hence there will be no congestion at all....
Richmond expansion would be a disaster unless something were done about the Nelson-Richmond road links. I think there are other routes West....I don't know much about them though.
In terms of Richmond expansion, will it ever be desirable though? All those industrial chimneys pumping out smoke, and a rather grotty shoreline.
At the moment, it's a dual carriageway from Richmond until you get just past Nelson Airport. at that point there's a roundabout and you go left, along the coastal part, rocks road and Tahunanui. Or straight on takes you in on the southern side of the city.

I agree Pete. Lets face it the SI is just a haven for criminals and the scenery is not worth shouting about. Theres nobody here ( really ) and theres no shops apart from dairies, so why would an self respecting londoner want to spend all their money on buying a peice of worthless SI turf ?
Don't bother - the NI is so much nicer, in fact what the hell am I doing down here anyway ? :laugh

Agree - Nelson has the potential to be a bit of nightmare traffic wise. They're trying to allieviate it anyway. The proposed Richmond growth looks good. They're attempting to move most of the mid level industry away from residential areas ( and the main rd ) and hide it further inland. They're proposing to build a dual carriageway at Richmond lights and along where the showground is and also replace the industry sited along the road with more ' eye friendly ' office spaces. Theres also due a few thousand houses. What I read, they're planning for it to be 40,000+ within 20 years, so matching or exceeding Nelsons population.
Could be a nightmare at Tahuna when all this is done ! :(
Turnover of houses is very low as the place is a haven for retirees and they simply don't move very often. I guess we'll juts have to wait until they all die. :laugh

Maybe people from the UK should stay in the UK. I would have thought the whole point of emmigrating to NZ was to get away from those UK things and embrace the difference that is NZ. :clap

Self respecting Londoner, there's an oxymoron for you, courtesy of a cockney moron. I think you are right Oxy, it's terrible in SI, tell all your mates, tell all of your like minded people and stay away, we don't want you here.
The scenery is not worth shouting about
much nicer down the Foolem road. :laugh
"and the fish and chips are so much better in London, aren't they dear, and the jellied eels, way shoulda stayed in London." I agree. :nice1
