Well we are now all settled in our own home in Browns Bay, Auckland and I'm beginning to think about Doctors, Dentists etc. Especially as I've just had a re-directed reminder from the NHS that our son is due a booster injection.

How does the whole GP thing work? Are there catchment areas as there are in the UK? Do I pay for each visit/consultation and then claim on our insurance (which we are in the process of setting up)? If I need to see somebody urgently can I just walk into a local surgery?

Finally does anyone have an recommends for a GP in the area as I need to get this booster injection sorted asap? Our son's school mentioned something about having 'an agreement' with a local GP but I'm assuming thats just for the regular eye and dental checks the kids get free of charge?

Thanks everyone,
Anneliese

You can visit/register with any surgery, doesnt matter where...

If you register with them, then you get cheaper consultations than if you are just passing by (as it were!) check if the surgery you are going to offer the under 6 free appointments, they are funded to be able to do so, but a lot of them still charge a fee.

any local one should be able to do your booster jabs for now, and you can then take your time looking round.

I just registered with the one up the road from our house (not any use to you though!), and our doc is lovely, and although we cant always get to see her the same day, we can get to see one of the others, so we struck lucky.

We are registered with Surgery at Westgate as they are open until 8pm weekdays and on weekends (for extra $10 fee). It is handy as OH does not need to take time off work for Dr. Will probably stay registered there even when we move...it's only about 10 minutes drive away out of rush hour!
