Hi all. We're due to arrive in Christchurch before the end of this month as skilled migrants now that our Visas have been issued. Simple question I hope - how and when do we get the equivalent of NZ tax codes and insurance numbers o give to our employers? Sorry if this is an old subject !

To obtain a tax code referred to as an IRD number, you need to complete form IR595. This form is for persons (ie not for companies, trusts or partnerships for which you'll need to use a IR596). This form can currently be found at :-

But they do sometimes change the webpage so just Google the ref (IR595 or IR596) and you should find it.

You'll need to send some form of photocopied ID with the form when sending it back to the NZ Inland Revenue but full instructions are on the forms.

Any information on the current lead times on this?

We will be leaving the UK in about 6 weeks (which includes Christmas). Have I left it to late to apply before we go?

Not a major issue, but just looking to do as much as possible before we go.

AFAIK, it takes approx 3-4 weeks to get your IRD number, so you still have time if you are quick.

If you have a NZ address that you can use then that might be better just in case, but shouldn't be a problem otherwise.

If you get to NZ and you still haven't received it yet, then you can always phone them for the number which of course they will have ready for you by then.
