Is it common for phone companies in the UK to lock phones?
It used to be in Malaysia a long time ago but no one does it anymore!

Shagen,
You can buy phones that will take any sim card, but generally yes, in the UK you buy or rent a phone for a specific service provider. It's not really a problem now though as they are, as Adam has demonstrated, relatively easy to unlock nowadays.
