I was supposed to be working from home today but 'wasted' my whole day thinking about NZ and browsing on this forum! I think I am an addict.....

We are at the early stages of the process, but I thought I would ask why all of you, whether you are in NZ, going soon or aiming to go - want to go...

I am in the UK but could list at least, well, the reasons why would get easily into double figures!

By the way - this forum, and all that contibute to it - is/are wonderful!

For us it is retirement - and we love NZ (plus have family there). The quieter and more gentle pace of life, the people, the stunning scenery and the fact that our pensions will go further and we can buy a home for half the price of our house here all make it a very attractive proposition. Oh - did I mention a gorgeous 3 year old????

For me, it was job uncertainty in the NHS and a hankering for a big adventure. We'd never been here, but thought it looked nice - it is!!

More space, less stress, adventure and because we could.... life's too short to say "what if"....

Just for the adventure to live in another country and see if you could make a living somewhere else in between friendly people and very impressive nature.

Oh so many reasons. Have a great life in the UK, but I guess, adventure, better life for the kids, UK is getting too full. Oh, and I hate the gone too far PC brigade and too much health & safety - I know it started well, but let me think for myself.

Hi and welcome - the addiction will wear off in a few months, I'm down to 2/3 forum visits a day!

I'm not really sure what made us think NZ was for us, lots of things I suppose really including having a favourite aunt over there!

We're in the UK at present, we're not going to make the move without a job, but hopefully that will come up soon!

All the best, A & C

After living in the West of Ireland for 8 years (originally from Belgium), we wanted better weather, more job opportunities and more leisure stuff to do. We also wanted to stay in an English speaking country because our kids could then be bilingual. We made the right choice. Schools are great, the kids are having a lovely childhood and growing up in a relaxed place, there is so much to do in Chch and the nature is beautiful. Oh and plenty of other reasons too ! Why not move ?
Good luck, Laura

I can only echo what everyone has said...it seems a long way off for us but I am so excited already! Now for another day of browsing this forum!

It may not be PC to say this, but the UK that I see now, is not one that I much like any more.... I can't help wondering what it will be like in 20 years, when my son is an adult.

Where should I begin?
NZ has a total population of 4m, which is only a little more than the population of Greater Manchester! (just down the road from us...); fewer people means everywhere is less crowded than here.

It is a chance to start a new life, and to have a big adventure while we are young enough to enjoy it.

It is a chance to experience a new and different culture & lifestyle, and for our son to have a different childhood (compared to here).

The hospitals are good (compared to UK).

There is good Policing (compared to UK).

They actually lock up criminals!

What's not to like????

For us it's a more outdoorsy lifestyle for our children.

But I can't say that we're not in it for a bit of adventure.

We fell in love with NZ when we got married there four years ago this Saturday! We feel that we will be able to have a better quality of life out there not only for us but our boys too. Our financial situation will be a better one and hopefully I will be able to work just a couple of days a week instead of full time giving me more time to be a mum.
We want to leave where we live because our once quiet family friendly village has many 'undesiarables' now, the local village shop windows are always smashed and my children wont go to the park on their own in fear they will be beaten up by the 'gang!'

We kept on saying that we couldn't go because of many reasons but never because we didn't want to.

My youngest son was very ill last year for a short time but it was touch and go.. he made a full recovery but it made us understand that you have to live for now and sometimes go with what your heart feels is the right thing to do.
It's a gamble as we are a big family but we will never know it it will work if we dont try!

Good luck to all who are making the move!:)

:laugh :laugh

love it!

and in answer to the thread - pretty much all of the above, but most of all, as Moorf pinpoints with "Lifes too short...", we didn't want to be sitting in our old age thinking " Wonder what life would have been like if we moved to NZ".

We love NZ, but struggle with being so far from family, so whether we'll stay for ever or just a few years is still uncertain - but I'm really glad we came and whatever happens, even if we do go back, we'll know the answer to the question!

(obviously 42 for the Douglas Adams fans amongst you !)
