Jen,
You have to be sure they are unlocked from any of the UK networks first. Then get your sim card and you're contactable with 5 mins
I think you can then only use a Vodaphone NZ sim card - I'm pretty sure Telcom NZ uses a different system!

A uk one would, not sure about a US one, the phone systems are different, in the UK & NZ the system is based on GSM, while in the US GSM coverage is patchy with most networks being based on CDMA.
You'd need a GSM phone, and one that is tri band.
This link will explain it all

I've got a UK Nokia 8310, currently on O2 but not locked... does anybody know if it will work in NZ with a Vodafone NZ sim card?
Thanks
Sophie

Yes it will but you need to get in unlocked - I got mine unlocked by Vodafone UK whilst I was still there for 20 pounds - although I noticed on Friday on another thread Adam gave a website that cost him less than a penny!

Recently unlocked mine and had no issues whatsoever. The instructions have you remove your SIM card so you are not able to accidentally "erase" your number. I performed the simple operation on my Nokia 6200 3G phone (GSM/GPRS, I knew there was a reason I bought the international version).
