I got the job in Wellington, following my VC interview last week..... the package sounds fab, and I'm expecting to see the contract later this week (they are sending it tomorrow by courier, and emailing me a copy for reference). :)
I think I'm still in a state of shock! I had thought that if I did secure a job (and a negative part of me said I wouldn't), that I would be bouncing off the ceiling, opening the champagne and woo-hooing all the time... but I'm not. I think the reality - and the enormity - of what needs to be done is starting to hit me. They want me to start before Christmas, this means selling 2 houses, 4 cars, packing up every item we own, closing down every bank account / credit card etc, and sorting out my cats to fly across - all in a month!?!?!? It doesn't seem feasible.... can it be done?
We started telling people at the weekend, those that we don't see very often, and it was weird to think "we won't ever see them again", or "we won't ever go here again". Hubby and I both feel a bit 'hollow'... as he pointed out to me, it's almost as if we're suffering from a terminal disease and going round saying bye to everything!
I really didn't think it would feel like this! Is this all part of the normal emotional rollercoaster?
Don't get me wrong, moving to NZ is absolutely the right thing for us to do, and on a logical level I am confident. The job sounds almost perfect, and I can't believe how lucky we are to have the chance to do this. I also know that if we delayed the move for a few months, we would still end up doing everything at the last minute anyway!
So tell me, at what point will I start to feel like celebrating!

Don't panic!! You're talking like you'll never see the UK again lol! ;)
Because of the short timescale do you have family who can help you out?
I would say do as much as you can, but you may need to think about options such as letting your houses rather than selling. I wouldn't close your bank accounts either. Keep your options (and your accounts!) open if you can. If after a year / 2 years / etc you're still loving it in NZ and you think you'll stay Forever then go ahead and cut the ties, but personally I would keep all my options open.
It's not just that, as for example my mother still has an English bank account even though she will never return here to live. It comes in handy sometimes, especially for holidays here.
Anyway, congrats again - sounds brilliant!

Wow Jane - that is certainly a fast move you have to make. Good luck with it all - and I'm sure once the shock has worn off and you have lots of things ticked off your list you will start to feel a bit more excited!

We're doing it right now, and going to Welly too. It's not as short as it looks if you're organised. If you need some lists I'll happily start some off in the Wiki.

Thanks folks!
Chiba - yes please for lists!!!
I have my house being valued today, and am running around like a headless chicken trying to de-clutter. At some point in the next couple of days I need to make a detailed list of everything to be done, so any help would be very greatfully received :)
Good luck to you too...

Congrats on the job! :raebanana:raebanana
We did it in 10 days after OH landed a job in Welly. I had lists covering the front of the fridge freezer and both sides of the kitchen door.
TBH Half a day spent planning (ok half the night!) was worth it as a good foundation and once we'd booked our tickets, I knew I had a timetable to work to.
Ok we didn't have a house to sell, but OH ran our business while I concentrated on arranging the move.
I'd suggest having a back up plan for the house, mortgage holiday or rent it out. Don't give your move date to the estate agent (they don't need to know everything) and it may stop you getting silly offers on the house.
Oh and keep a UK bank account, one of the best things we did. Nationwide allow this but not sure who else and it's been vital for presents, keeping life insurance payments going etc.
That's all I can think of this early in the morning. :o
Good luck and yes, it can be done!

NOW!!!
I know you are probably rushing around with a zillion and one things to do, but plan an evening, when you agree to go out, even if just for a couple of hours, have some nice food, a glass of wine and congratulate yourself on getting this far. All talk of jobs, to-do lists and goodbyes must be banned (you can do that when you get home!) and only talk of achievements, sites you're going to see and fun things you are going to do, is allowed.
I think with all the practical stuff and emotional stuff to wade through, people forget to see the excitement and joy in the situtaion. So on one of your many to-do lists jot down:
"Evening out to celebrate the adventure to come!" :cheers
Cheers

Thank you everyone. And yes I_Hulse, it is the TP job that I spoke about.
We had a mammoth tidy up today, in readiness for the estate agent. He was very positive, and is confident that he can sell our house in 6 weeks. I will be amazed if that happens, but he reckons there is a waiting list of people looking for properties like this.... we'll see. He's back to take the photos on Saturday, and so the clearing-out operation continues. Boxes everywhere!!!
Smiler, I can't believe you did everything in 10 days!!! It makes a month seem like a luxury :)
Chiba - how is the list coming on?

Well, I started dumping stuff into a Wiki page and will add more later. Sorry, it's pretty lame so far! If anyone else wants to join in, feel free.

Definately keep a UK bank account - sort out internet access for it and change the address to parents/friends. Tell the inland revenue you're leaving (you may get a refund!) and if you end up having to rent out propertyin the UK, register as an absentee landlord. If you know a contact in NZ, set up a mail redirection with the post office (the international rate is well worth it for a year!) .
Buy an expensive bottle of New Zeland wine and enjoy it - knowing that by christmas time you'll find beter and cheaper wine when you're in NZ!

Yes, it can be done........
We had 6 week to do it with a 5yr old to think of too.
Its a lot of hard work, sleepless nights, never ending lists, but it is definetly worth it! We havent regretted it for a minute.
Good luck
