Hi just a quick question:

I'm 5'11 about 171/2 Stone and quite fit:

Swimming 3 or 4 Times a week approx. 5000m per session plus moutain biking, Surf Lifesaving.

I have completed triathlons moutain marathons all at this weight.

I have a swimmers build ie big Shoulders and chest. I've just done done my BMI calculation and as expected I come out as obese.

Do the medicals take build into account or would I be expected to loose almost 3 stone to get to overweight.

Any advice gatefully received.

Cheers

Hi Slipsurfer,

I've just done your BMI check.
As you say, you are technically obese. However, your BMI works out at 34.31 (if your height & weight are accurate).Just make sure you're not over the 'magic' 35, which for some reason the immigration department have decided is tooooooooooo much !

Good Luck with your application !

Hi Slipsurfer,

This BMI thing is relevant to me too and i'm a bit like you, overweight on paper but fitter than many and do my 60mins 5x/week etc etc.

As I understood it even if your BMI is over 35 as long as fasting bloods are ok for glucose and cholesterol levels then no more is said and off you go to NZ............ However this does not seem to be the case for everyone, (see the post that Mels refers to). Its just really confusing and I'm looking forward to see if there are any further answers to your question.

Meanwhile if you doe a search on here for "weight, BMI, medicals" or similar I'm sure you will find some useful posts.

Good Luck

Helen

This is a bit late in the day but I just spoke to a Dr here who does the medicals and he said in more goes on waist measurement.
If you're female your waist measurement should be no more than 88cm, for males it is 102cm.
Guess I'll be carrying on with the diet:laugh

I was classed as overweight and I don't have a very defined waist, so that got my BMI quite high. I had to have 3 extra blood tests, which came back clear. We sent off the medicals and there was no problems. As long as you aren't going to be a drain on medical resources you will be fine.

Regards Clare.
