Dear All,

I was just wanting to pick peoples brains about taking on/opening a hostel in NZ. This is our dream and I just wondered if anyone out there has already done it or knows someone thats doing it. If so, any advice, thoughts, stories would be very gratefully received.

Cheers folks

This is our dream too and we are thinking of converting an old barn on the property we have just purchased into a self contained/B&B. So would be interested in others experiences too.

Thanks

Jo

Over the years quite a few immigrants have come in on the Long Term Business Visa, and a preferred business was running things like motels (I realise you are probably not using this as the application route). They tend not to last long, I am speaking from personal experience here. It is a very hard and intrusive way to make a living, you never have a moment of peace during the season, the phone can ring at any time of the day or night (some Europeans don't seem to understand the concept of time zones!)

My best advice would be to get a job as hostel managers for a year or two before you decide to spend your own money on a business. It really doesn't suit everyone.
