Hi everyone,
Well just started the process of getting quotes, we only have a 2 bed house, 2 adults 1 child, with which i thought not a great deal in it but after the first quote which was £3,600 i'm starting to think should we just buy when we get over. got another two companies coming for quotes next week so looking forward to seeing what they quote. Does anyone have any experience of shipping costs for a small 2 bed house:(

Hi Libra81
Our quote for shipping our contents is between £1,800 - 2,200. We are using a local firm. To be fair it was not our entire contents that has been quoted. However since reading info on this forum the amount of items we are now considering taking have increased slightly so the quote might be higher. So it sounds ok to me. I'll let you know in the future as not going to March 08. Would like furniture etc to go February 08.
PS Can anyone tell me if clothes pack well in the boxes supplied, or should I put them in suitcases. I think the shipping guy mentioned special "wardrobes" for clothes. Whats the condition of everything at the other end?
I'd be grateful for any replies/comments

I've had 3 companies come in at between £3200 & £3400 & that's for a 20 foot container, they are both large companies, the third came today so waiting on that quote he said about £3500 but so did one of the others so hopefully they might come in a bit lower as a few people ave used them on this forum.
I've seen in the brochure the wardrobes they use which looked good but I got the feeling it was only if you had loads of stuff, our double wardrobe wasn't enough

We vacuum packed all our clothes in those bags that can be vacuum sealed. They were fine at the NZ arrival, some things needed to hang for a couple of days to have wrinkles come out. I was less worried about things in those sealed bags, because the main concern is humidity, (as well as bugs) and in a container for 6 weeks its a long time. Personally I preferred to pack my own clothes and boxes, it saved us a lot of money and I knew exactly where everything was, and I knew my special treasures had been given extra protection.
Also with the vacuum bags and with boxes, you pack a lot more in than in those wardrobes, and since you are paying for space not weight, that saves you money.

We did a bit of haggling on our quotes and got a reasonable amount off, think about £400ish.
As for clothes the shippers packed them all, apart from underwear!!! All things our of the wardrobe stayed on hangers in large boxes. All arrived a bit crinkled but otherwise fine.

Thanks for the advice Kanatakiwi, I have packed a lot of stuff already which has been in the boxes since we sold our house, all itemised in duplicate. still loads more to do though! The clothing being the last, we are going to get another Autumn and winter, at least any new purchases get a double season of waring. (just an excuse to do some more retail therapy)

Are those quotes for self pack or for full service? The difference in price for us was $4000 USD savings because we were doing it all self packed. I just found a freight forwarder to get us the container and book it's passage.
