Hey everyone

A question - I've never before had to even consider moving my stuff to another country as when I arrived in the UK all I had was a backpack - of course things are a tad different these days and we have 'stuff'.

Are there any restrictions on being able to ship stuff to New Zealand if we are not going over for permanent residence. If all goes well we should be over on a student visa for me and a temporary work permit for hubby which are by no means permanent (although we are hoping to apply for pm once in NZ). Will we be allowed to ship all our stuff over to NZ even though we are on temporary visas?

Thanks all

I think NZIS recently changed it so that 1 year work permits are now exempt from paying the GST of 12.5%. I think you'll have to pay it on a student permit so best to have everything shipped over in your husband's name.

So yes, there are restrictions, but they may not apply to you. Worst case you'd have to pay 12.5% general service tax on the value of your goods, but that may not apply to you if one of you does have a work permit. I'll see if I can find some of the threads on this topic for you.

Here we go.
These may help.

In the second one do note that 1 year work visas now allow you to bring in personal goods with no GST (I think!!)
