I know there's been quite a lot written about the costs of moving an entire household, but thought it might be useful to list here what we have been quoted for a much smaller move.

Apparently we've got about 66 CuFt of goods comprising:
2 bike cartons
7 book cartons
5 tea cartons
Computer Monitor Box
Home Cinema Box
Flat pack IKEA table

The quotes that we got for this (and the service experienced!) varied widely.

Anglo-Pacific
Didn't reply to our email. When we chased they didn't say sorry for not replying (but were otherwise friendly). Quoted at £678

Crown
Didn't reply to our email. When I called they promised a reply within 24hrs. We've heard nothing yet and that was a week ago

Excess-Baggage
Sent us someone else's quote (we're not moving to Perth after all  ) and when they eventually replied came back at £900ish!!!

Britannia
Good follow up. Called us the day after the email to check the details and then followed up with a written reply the day after that. Quote of £750ish

Bishops
No reply to our email

PSS
Great reply by email a day after our original enquiry and speedy replies to emails thereafter. Quote of £617

All of these are excl. insurance which we're thinking of contacting Letton Percival about. Needless to say we're going with PSS.

Hope this info helps anyone else who might be in a similar position with mainly books, DVDs, households items to send.

it might be worth packing it yourselves into the container and sending it groupage, I think it could be about £50 a square metre and there is a company at Thurrock called Crayford freight that we used that were very good. If you want any further info PM me.

Thanks Veronica - so that means it would be about £250 per cubic metre? As we'd have about 66CuFt it would mean about £470 (66 x 0.0283 to get CuM) if sending via Crayford Freight. Well, that's not bad - another possible £150 off the bill :nice1 , but then we'd need to get it to Thurrock (hire a van, pay petrol and buy boxes, bubble wrap etc. :? ), so I guess that would be about £75 or so. Still a saving of £75 in total (off the PSS price) though.

Did the groupage price you paid include delivery at the other end or did you have to arrange for that separately?

Sorry I haven't pm'd you, but thought this info would be much more useful in the main message board for others to see in the future.

Thanks v much. Really appreciate your advice.

Hi Haydee,

We're packing our stuff ourselves and delivering to Allied Pickfords in Avonmouth, it's saving us a bit of money but adding some worries about how to pack some things!

We've been quoted about £900 for 350 cu ft... the 350 cu ft was estimated by PSS who quoted £1500 for the whole package - packing, delivery and unpacking. We have no idea how accurate that was because we keep finding more stuff and changing our minds about what to take!

When we phoned for quotes we asked for both including and excluding packing and delivery to the warehouse to see if it was worth it!

We're packing now and delivering on Saturday so we'll let you know how it goes... :hopeso

Anybody got any tips for insurance? Terry seems to think if the ship went down or the container fell off the ship's insurance should cover it... I'm not so sure :no

No we just hired a trailer for a couple of hours about $18 from the local garage for the morning. Insurance I am not sure of.

Thanks for the replies there. Sorry, should have said that the rates quoted above were all for us packing the stuff ourselves. Definately food for thought though about both Crayford Freight and Allied Pickford.

Sophie - I called Letton Percival and spoke to Brian Naughton (sorry don't have the number here at work, but if you do a search I know there have been threads on the forum before somewhere). He was really helpful on the phone and explained exactly what is and isn't covered by insurance. Rather than me try explaining it (and probably getting the info wrong ), might be worth giving him a call.

Good luck with your move.

Hi, I managed to find someone via a forum (not this one, but a Dutch forum), who is willing to take on my stuff in his container!

We agreed on 100 euro (69 pounds) a cubique meter (i'm hoping to stay within a meter) and i will help him pack the container.
Packing i will do myself.

When someone hires a container almost always there is some room left for other stuff, and it saves everybody money!

:cheers

Well done Karoline,

That sounds like a great idea if you haven't got too much to send! :nice1

Unfortunately we need about a third of a container... a little too much to share.

I'm just hoping no-one sharing our container puts anything wet in that makes everything mouldy!! :uhoh
