Hi there
I,ve been hearing that dentistry is very expensive in NZ? I have 3 kids so a bit concerned.Or how much are people paying for health insurance? Is there a national health care system.I would be working self employed.
Any advise appreciated

As a rough guide, seeing my hygenist for a clean and scrub lasting around 45 mins is $70.00. In the UK this used to cost around 20 pounds with the dentist, but was done the old fashion way with the little wheely drill. Here it's all sonic (?) laser stuff. Not too sure on the teckie details. :laugh
Our first appointment with the dentist was $220 each and that included a full set of digital, ready there and then, xrays. No waiting 6 weeks and having another appointment like my UK dentist. It also included some laser cleaning.
OH has just found a nasty cracked back tooth and if they can repair it, it's going to cost around $1300-1500.
I've found so far that the dentist we use here has far superior equipment to my UK one. They are both from the same dentistry college in Dunedin and know one another!
HTH.

Wife had to get root canal work and a crown that came in at a scary 2.5k. Very good service but never had problems with dental service anywhere (wouldn't expect it with the fees they charge ;) )

I had a root canal a year ago here in NZ and it cost me $1200 - as Smiler said, a very well equipped dental surgery and excellent service/aftercare. Still, it's expensive on a Kiwi salary.
More recently a molar broke and I'm having it recapped. This is going to cost, with 3 hygienist 1-hr cleans and polishes, $875 including digi-xrays etc.
Not sure which hurts more - the cost or the tooth.

slightly off topic, but does anyone have a good dentist in Auckland, they would recommend? looking for good service, modern techniques, and hopefully a moderate price.

The kids have their teeth checked by a dentist that comes to school .
If there are any problems they send home a letter advising you to go and see a dentist for treatment .
Last year my daughter needed a filling and there was no charge.
This year my son has a tooth growing in the wrong place ,and I have been recommended to take him too an Orthadontist . We go next week,I will let you know of any charges then.

Check out this link:- Dental Care (http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/settlementpack/health/OtherHealthCare/DentalCare.htm) for more details.
You certainly don't need a PR to have free dental care as we used this service when on WTR, the children may need a student visa though (which I assume they would have if you had an LTBV)?
BTW, when we enrolled in the local school, they provided a list of local dentists that were enrolled in the Governments dental benefits scheme.

What about dental insurance? Any available?
