Hi,

On our recent trip to NZ I noticed a very strange squawking noise coming from a tree (it sounded a bit like Clunk from Wacky Races !).

When I located the offender it had black feathers and a small amount of white on its chest.

This bird seemed fairly common as I encountered it again in different parts of the country.

The noises it makes are hilarious.

Does anyone know what bird it is ?

if it sounds like this then it is a Tui

Well, going by the white "bow" feathers on its chest - this bird is an aristocrat
for sure !!

Going by the "Clunk from Wacky Races" comparison, I'd guess it's more likely to be an Australian magpie than a tui.

We have a local Tui that's picked up on the woo-woo-woo-bip-bip that you get when people forget their car alarm is on and then shut it off.

It's quite annoying at 5 in the morning :mad:

I reckon it's a Magpie too from the Clunk reference - they sound totally different here (OH thinks they sound like an old modem!) and it's a very noticeable and loud noise.

Hi hate the sound that the magpie makes, it's like a screeching child!!! Whenever I hear one I think a child is in distress or something :uhoh . Now the tui I could listen to all day long, they are one of my favourite NZ birds and the lovely Pukeko.

I think tuis sound like R2D2
