I've just been issued a temporary work visa (1 year) so I can start my job while the residency application is still being processed (hopefully that will be approved soon too!).

Does anyone know if I have to get private health coverage OR travel health insurance? I know I won't be covered by the public system (visa is only for 1 year not 2) but I wasn't given any directives yet on 'you must show that you have insurance' sort of thing...

Any advice would be great!

PS, my visa conditions are here, no mention of insurance: The holder may travel to NZ and on application may be granted a permit for/to 02/Dec/2008. You must leave New Zealand before expiry of your permit or face removal. Funds waived. Outward passage waived. The holder may work as unspecified for any employer in New Zealand.

I think so. I think 2 years and longer are covered by national health care.
I could be horribly wrong. :exit
Edit:

Whoops just reread it. I don't know that you NEED it.
You will just have to pay out of pocket if you are injured.

Southern Cross wasn't that expensive when I looked at it. $1300USD for a premium (laptop covered) coverage for 2 people for a year.
