Hi
The tax bands are as follows: (unless they've changed!)
$0 - $38,000: 19.5%
$38,001 - $60,000: 33%
$60,001 upwards: 39%
So if you earn $50 000, you will get taxed 19.5% on the first $38 000 and 33% on the next $12 000. So you get more out with 2 people earning $50 000 than 1 person earning $100 000.

Depends on what you mean by better? If you mean get taxed less then no it's worse, generally you pay more tax in NZ than you do in the UK.
There is no tax free allowance, so you start paying tax straight away and the bands are lower than the equivalent in the UK i.e. more people in NZ pay the top rate of tax than in the UK.

The current govt in NZ gives most of it's tax breaks to lower earners with kids. Various tax credits based on number of sprogs and household earnings - so start popping them out and go down to a 3-4 day week and you'll be OK
