We've got a wireless router that was used alongside our BT modem but we don't use it anymore - long story, had BT and NTL at the same time!!
We now only have NTL which is a cable internet provider. We hope to come over next May, June time and are currently trailing a cable around the house attached to the laptop!! We don't mind buying a wireless router if we can use it when we get to NZ, but feel that the £40 to £60 is a little bit of a waste if a cable modem is useless when we arrive, and also is it worth packing the BT router for use?
Thanks for any info

We use our router that we used with BT in the UK without any problems :)

Are you talking about a router that is for a standard BT style phone socket, or a router for a cable internet provider? If its the standard BT type, ours worked fine, you just need to remember you cant change the plugs on them, so they have to be in an adapter, or a 4 way Uk extension with an NZ plug on the end!

Thanks for that, yes, it is a standard BT router, I'm assuming that a router designed for use with a cable modem cannot be used in NZ?

You have a BT modem that you don't use anymore, is it worth bringing, then yes I would bring it. Normally in NZ you would be given the modem as part of the connection package (normally free) so you may not actually use it but then you would at least have it as a back-up.
Will the cable modem be any use? I would suspect that this is a no and you may as well sell it in the UK. There are only a few regions with cable in NZ so maybe it would work so you could check with them. Again I would expect them to give you a modem if you can access their service.
Now the real question, should you buy a wireless router now to connect to your cable modem and will it work in NZ. Certainly a standalone wireless router will work in NZ without any problems so I would buy one now (almost certainly cheaper than NZ) and you get to use it, or put it another way don't buy an integrated cable modem and wireless router.

Thanks Ian, the BT wireless router is a stand alone one, and the cable one we are considering getting is also stand alone, so I think we will get it.
Thanks for everyone's help:)
