I wonder if somebody can inform me which area has better opportunities for a Visual Basic programmer with 10 years experience in Insurance industry. The reason that I ask is because my OH and I haven't decided yet which area we we want to settle. It probably will be the area which have the most opportunities for my trade. ;) .

I heard from the Expo's that Wellington is profoundly C# but can somebody confirm this?

I think this is a ridiculous generalization.

There should be plenty of VB work in either location. The best thing for you to do is look on job websites such as SEEK and see what is available.

Oh I don't know... Wellington is profoundly cold (compared to Akl)

Well you can only work for one employer at a time, so you only need one job. Either decide on one of the cities and put all your efforts on finding work there (and keep an open mind) OR decide you don't mind which one and put all your efforts into finding work in either one (and keep an open mind).

Bear in mind that you are unlikey to have specifically chosen New Zealand to start with for its job opportunities.

This isn't much of a specific answer but then most questions can be adequately answered using basic principles.

Thanks for all your replies, I think Auckland might have the upper hand at the moment. Now just investigate how much the rent is for a decent 2 bedroom house:confused: . I think, I have to do some reading about this in this forum.:o

Seen plenty of Java and bits of C++ in Welly. One thing I've noticed between the 2 in my field is the salaries in Welly are significantly better; the govt sector is paying pretty well at present in certain areas

No - they do a background check but nothing too major. (This is my experience working for a couple of the Ministries)
