I've never been asked for passport numbers to book a flight. You have to provide them either at or before check-in for US flights but not to actually book.

Oh maybe not so daft after all - thanks :)

I believe you just need full names, as shown in the passport. There is, for example, nothing stopping a dual citizen from using either of his or her passports when actually booking or boarding, or vice versa.

We flew with Emirates and on the Saturday tried to book the flights on line but came up against the old passport numbers conundrum , i.e couldnt book one way flight unless we had them!!Yes ours were sitting in NZ house. Phoned up Emirates and yes they said unless you have your passport numbers you cant book flights and claim extra baggage allowance for emigrating, would I like to reserve the flights until Monday when we could phone and get numbers?
Yes please I said and very glad I did as the flights for Clare and I had gone up by £600 online on Monday.:roll Phew

If you login to the INZ site, you can look at your original EOI if you filled it in online - > click on 'What's happening?' or 'Find out more...' (they both got the same place). Your submitted EOI will be a link under Online Applications... Description. This opens a new window. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see your submitted application, click on 'Print'. This opens a new window showing your EOI - scroll around and collect your passport numbers (if you put them in when you applied online, of course).
Or you could be paranoid like me, and have a photocopy of everything you sent to INZ 'just in case'. As well as a copy of the printable version of the EOI saved when I submitted it. :laugh
Like the others, I've never been asked for passport numbers when booking a flight - but it's good to know about the extra baggage allowance thing.

I didn't know Emirates give you extra baggage allowance for Emigrating? Is this at a cost?

The extra is over and above the normal 20 kgs so we had 40kgs each, but this does include hand luggage.
You have to prove to them that you're emigrating i.e. e-.mail or fax them a copy of your Blue stickers . A small cost to double your allowance and avoid L A :yes

Booked flights without passports numbers through Air NZ in the end. Just stated on website that it would take more time at check-in without them. I think I can add them to booking when they come back from NZIS anyhow.
Thanks for advice folks
Karen :)

The main reason people need to have passports to book flights is so that the names are correct on the tickets - Any slight differences between your ticket and your passport, eg Steven or Steve instead of Stephen, could mean you won't be let onto the flight. As long as you are 100% certain of the spelling of your own name (!) you shouldn't need it.
