Hello all,

I had a few questions regarding this for anyone out there that has had any experiences with NZQA:

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/branch/londonbranchhome/News/NZQA+requirements.htm

I fall into the category of I have claimed bonus points for a qualification on the LTSSL with no job offer.

I am certain my degree is a level seven as it is on the recognized list of qualifications for the United States. The big question is if my degree will line up with the qualification needed for the "Environmental Scientist". The qualification necessary is a BS of Science in environmental studies (does not say a major in environmental studies like most other occupational qualifications on the LTSSL). I have researched this a bit, and there really is not an "environmental studies" major out there offered by any of the major NZ colleges so I am having some trouble finding a comparison to my major.

I have a BS of Science with a major in Environmental Geography. When comparing my transcript with the other environmental degrees that the major NZ colleges offer, most of my major classes taken line up pretty well. Hopefully, the NZQA assessment officer think so as well!!

The LTSSL states that qualifications must be comparable to the standard of the New Zealand qualifications listed, ie a BS of Science in environmental studies. Got the following out of the SM operations manual.

15. Whether a recognized qualification is comparable to a qualification listed in Column 4 of the LTSSL is not something that should be assessed by INZ staff. Assessments of comparability should only be undertaken by NZQA.

16. If a principle applicant has a recognized qualification and is claiming bonus points for a recognized qualification in an area of absolute skills shortage but the actual wording of their qualification title does not exactly match what is listed in Column 4 of the LTSSL confirmation of comparability should be obtained from NZQA (see paragraphs 21 to 30 below).

17. Officers should not rely on statements or letters made by tertiary institutions themselves claiming that a particular course of study is comparable to one listed in Column 4 of the LTSSL. INZ will only accept NZQA assessments of comparability.

Does anyone have any idea of where the NZ standard of "environmental studies" or any other qualification can be found? I have checked KiwiQuals and the New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations but have found nothing that describes it. I am just trying to get an idea of what my major will be compared to for this assessment.

I send off my application to NZQA to get the process started on Monday, so hopefully it all goes well!!

Thanks for any further info you can provide.

Travis

Hey TJH,
I think NZQA are the only authority on your question, which is quite a long and involved one.
Hope the application to them goes well, and isn't too long and involved!
