Right, going south part of south island, dundein, bluff, caltin forest to milford sound etc....
Where about in south island that I need to cover myself up against sandflies this time!!??

They like living near water, so beaches and rivers seem to be their haunt. At least they don't carry any diseases. And of course you know when they are biting you, otherwise you would suddenly find yourself covered in bites later on, which I think would be worse.

Milford yes, Dunedin no - everywhere in between probably not, unless you are near running water (like a little creek going into a lake or harbour)
Milford is worst for them, but I was in Dunedin last weekend and didn't even consider using sandfly stuff. Bluff will be fine - trust me, you probably won't stay long enough to get bit as it's gone quite down hill. Drive all the way round to the signpost, get your pic and then head back!
