There is a thread on here somewhere on which I posted that you can't get a fresh turkey at xmas in NZ because the seasons are all wrong. However, today I happened to be speaking to the Tegal rep in foodtown who assures me that they have been raising turkeys with the specific purpose of having them 'oven ready size' for Xmas, (not previously frozen then defrosted). Apparently you have to order them from which ever store you use.

So I thought I would post my correcting on here.

Please let me know someone if a 'Turkey' materialises before Xmas then! :nice1

I have resigned myself to ordering a 'Beef Fillet' from my butcher - but having been not long in NZ still hanker after a bit of old UK Xmas tradition. :laugh

I've seen turkeys availble every xmas for the last 6 years. Moore Wilson's in Welly have 2 brands, Tegel and Canter valley. The latter are free range turkeys which are much much much better than Tegel will ever produce. I call them impossible to ruin turkeys, as in they stay moist and tasty whatever you do to them. I will be taking one in my hand luggage up to Auckland this year!
I hope I don't have to eat my words and overcook it this time though.
I'll be cooking it stuffed with lemons, rosemary, garlic and olive oil and covered with streaky bacon to make it more summerish, and looking forward to it already!

Can you get Canter Valley Turkey's anywhere else? We are in Tauranga!

I just did a search on the net and Canter valley turkeys etc are sold at the following places in Auckland:

Sea Services (09) 379 4217
Poultry Distributors Ltd (09) 815 0800
Village Butchery & Deli - Waiheke Island (09) 372 8798

The closest place to Tauranga would be this one I think:
Rotorua
Creans Foods (07) 345 9104

For the full list of locations click here:

I'm going to check out the auckland locations.

yum I can taste it already:p

further to my last post, I emailed them to ask whether their turkeys are fresh or frozen, and they advise they will be supplying some of their turkeys fresh to the Aussie Butcher chain in Auckland

Just seen the latest Woolworths flyer and it says "don't forget to order your fresh Turkey from the meat department"

This makes sense as it was already posted that you can order them from Foodtown which is the same retail group as Woolworths (so would expect them to also be available from Countdown as well).

So it does look like you can get them from the main retailers this year if you order in advance.

Well, I guess that's something I won't have to look for when we come over - we don't have Turkey here so I won't be bothered about finding one for next Christmas!!! We always splash out on the best cut of beef we can as it's a special day, we also have a nice piece of Lamb - but finding one of those won't be a problem next year!!!!
