Hi,
I recently recevied an offer as a civil engineer graduate to work on the South island :), most likely in Queenstown. I am curious to know how far $45 000 will stretch in this part of New Zealand. I was also wondering if there is anybody out there who knows about biochemistry related jobs, as I have a long term girl friend who is also looking to make the move at some point. What are there chances of her finding work with a degree but little experience?

I am also curious about windsurfing in and around Queenstown if anybody can help?

Cheers,
Craig

Start with looking at housing - Queenstown is one the most expensive housing regions in the country (coming in just after Auckland, I believe). Keep an eye on trademe.co.nz under housing rent/buy to get an idea of what to expect. My thoughts are $45 K won't go too far there.

Seems Queenstown is more heavily weighted toward tourism industry rather than a science research hotbed and it may be difficult for your partner to find work in her industry there. May have better luck in Dunedin (if you want to stay close to moutains/lakes/sea on the South Island) as there is a university there for her to plug into.

Are you looking at Queenstown for recreational opportunities or only because that's where the job offer is coming from? If recreation, there's ample opportunity in many other parts of the country that may offer better salary and work opportunity for both of you.

This job may be a good foot in the door though for you if you're coming on a work visa or work-to-residency vias.

While the recreational opportunities are a major attraction. Queenstown is simply where I am likely to be placed. It can't be confirmed yet as I won't start work until October 2008.

My girlfriend simply wants an idea of the oppurtunitys in biochemistry in Newzealand generally, as she isn't likely to move over straight away with me. Also the company I would be working for are relatively keen for new graduates to move around, so Queenstown wouldn't be permanent.

In Queenstown itself you may encounter problems with traffic and pedestrians, but outside the town the lake is fairly uncluttered, and as with many parts of New Zealand it does get breezy sometimes.:D

I've been staying in Queenstown this week, and I haven't seen any windsurfing.

It looks like you could, although the lake is very cold, it just doesn't seem popular at the moment.
