Hi All,

My teenagers are in to rock music in a big way and are always off to see local and well known bands (well known to them not me:o )

We have a few locations here that feature bands and i didn't know if there was a main venue in Auckland that featured local bands and also if some of the bigger bands play in Auckland?

For me it's Take That every time - went to see them on Saturday - screamed like a girl and danced all night long;):clap

Auckland has quite a good music scene.
Vector is the main stadium where all the big acts play - Justin Timberlake was there last week, and upcoming acts include Chemical Brothers and The FooFighters.

Big Day Out takes place at the end of January, and is a one day festival at Mt Smart Stadium with lots of bands playing. This years line up (well, next years..) can be found at:
http://www.bigdayout.com/lineup/artists.php

Smaller venues include the Transmission Room, the Kings Arms, the Studio. And lots of pubs and clubs have bands playing. (The boys from Autozamm and Opshop regularly jam in a bar I frequent.)

My two eldest teenagers were pleasantly surprised by the music scene in Auckland. They derided the whole idea of decent music in NZ and assumed they would be forced to listen to some kind of awful country and western stuff. Since arriving they've seen My Chemical Romance, they're off to see the Foo Fighters plus others whose names escape me.

The scene is quite good, plus NZ bands aren't half bad apparently.

Personally I'm off to see the Police in January. Come on Sting...

Dead jealous about the bands they get in Auckland - they've had some great gigs there recently and the New Year's looking good (Chem Bros/Kings of Leon for starters) - shame I can't afford to fly up there once a week :wah

Errrm, we've got Bjorn Again coming to Chch :roll

:D I've seen them 3 times and it was a great laugh each time.... but I'd much rather have the Kings of Leon :p

And a very old friend of mine is engaged to one of the singers!

I don't suppose this is the right thread to ask who the heck are the Foo fighters?

Will someone let me know when David Cassidy is wheeled in please.

Do many families go to Big Day Out with kiddies?

We were going to take the kids to Glastonbury one year, but its a bit far to travel now.

Cheers

Not in the same way that there are families at Glastonbury, no.
You do get a few, but there isn't really an awful lot for children to do there - unless they are really into the music. I imagine small children would get terribly bored and possibly pushed about in the crowds, especially in all the stage areas. It's more like a minature Reading than Glastonbury.

Parachute is more child friendly, but that is a Christian music festival.

Thanks Kerry, that's a pity, I've checked out the website and they certainly seem to have a lot of rules and regulations:

Big Day Out MA 15+
The Big Day Out 2008 is for mature audiences. Patrons under 15 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

GUIDELINES ON WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE UNDER 15

A guardian can mean a lot of things so we need to explain what it means to the Big Day Out:

A guardian is a parent or an older brother or sister over 18

YOU WILL NEED TO BRING

1) Identification for both you & your guardian and proof of how you are related (eg birth certificate)
2) Proof that your guardian is over 18. This is something that we take very seriously and will be monitoring closely at the show.

Please be aware of the following:
1) Your parent or guardian will need to attend the show and must have a ticket as well
2) We will be making sure that your parent/guardian is REAL and is responsible
3) The maximum number of people one parent can accompany is two (at least one of whom must be their own child). The maximum number a guardian can escort is 2 siblings
4) Parents/guardians will be issued with a basic duty of care flyer at entry
5) Most importantly, if we don't believe you, you will all be refused entry
So, make an effort, drag along a parent or older brother or sister & have a great day!

DUTY OF CARE OF A PARENT OR GUARDIAN

1) Under 15's should not enter the controlled area in front of the main stages
2) Make sure you arrange meeting locations & times in the event you separate
3) Under no circumstances should the parent or guardian become intoxicated ( :( )
4) Under no circumstances should you leave the show without the person/people you are guarding

This bit is full of the kind of things my Mum would say to me! Sensible shoes, make a list, have a good breakfast and no excessive use of mind altering drugs!

PLANNING FOR THE SHOW

1) Remember to bring ID, your ticket, important phone numbers, sun block, a watch, any medication you may need, a hat, charged mobile phone, pen, vitamins & still camera if you want plus enough cash for the day. If you have any chronic conditions or illness (ie epilepsy, diabetes, asthma) be sure to carry information regarding your condition & emergency contact number on your person at all times. Making a list isn't a bad idea.

2) Allow enough time to get to & into the show. Presume around 30minutes to get through the gates & security checks depending on the time of day.
Dress for the day & weather. Wear sensible shoes & clothes and bring a rain coat if need. Avoid wearing jewellry that could potentially harm yourself or others.

3) Bringing a bag or pack is handy but remember that it will take longer to get into the show & if you want to check it in it will add two more cues to your day.

4) You can bring into the show an unopened bottle of water (no glass) & reasonable amounts of food without problems. Fruit is highly recommended but don't throw it at the bands. ( :D )

5) Don't presume that the laws of the real world don't apply to the Big Day Out. Anyone caught holding or dealing illegal substances will be treated the same way as anywhere else.

6) Don't turn up drunk or out of it as you may be refused entry or will probably pass out before you see any of the bands you paid to see.

7) If you intend to meet up with you friend outside the show remember how big the show is & choose a specific spot & time especially if they have your ticket.

7) Check the back of your ticket for restricted items conditions such as Video cameras, alcohol & umbrellas as we have no provision to check them in so you will need to get rid of it or take it back home or to your car.

8) Try to have a good breakfast & keep patient & calm. It will be a long, hopefully fantastic day.

SORTING OUT YOUR DAY

Now that you are in the site it is important to plan your day. Obviously the priority is making sure you get to see the acts that mean the most to you but don't forget the basics.

1) If you are with friends & intend to travel home together arrange a place & time to meet up at the end of the night.

2) Large crowds, a long day & hot weather in combination will tire you out. Make sure you pace yourself, drink plenty of water, eat some food that will give you some energy & minimize sun exposure.

3) Excessive use of mind altering substances of any kind including alcohol can result in the day changing from fantastic to a nightmare in a very short amount of time. Don't forget you need to get home after the show & an ambulance isn't the best or cheapest way to do so. Don't be afraid to tell us if something is going wrong, we only want to help you, not judge you.

CROWD CONTROLS

In all cities except Auckland a second, controlled barrier system known as a 'D' barricade will be erected in front of the main arena stages. The purpose of this structure will be to provide a greater control of & for security & safety teams to the front of the main stages.

This will be an alcohol free zone plus security will have discretionary powers to restrict crowd numbers plus people who are too small or young, intoxicated, aggressive or possibly drug affected, incapacitated, in a wheel chair or on crutches, has been identified as a crowd surfer or is in possession of items considered unsuitable to be in the area such as boogy boards or large bags or backpacks.

Crowd surfing, moshing & circle dancing are dangerous activities & wil not be tolerated. (hee hee - dangerous cirlcle dancing :laugh ). Offenders will either be banned from the 'D' area or removed from the site.

Water may also be sprayed on the audience in this area so mobile phones & cameras are at risk.

Oh well, I'll hust have to take my radio down the park instead.

Cheers

Tia
