Hi,
I have heard from a removal company that if I want to ship my car over then I have to have the speedo converted to km per hour ! Is this true ? This would involve taking out that dashboard and getting it professionally fitted and I guess would not be cheap.
Thanks for any advice.

I thought speedos were dual thingys ie both mph and km/h?
what car do you have?

its a Honda CRV. Yes it has teh kph in an inner smaller circle on the speedo.
He said something about because they need to calculate the total overall km it has done (it obviously says in miles at the moment). Surely its just a case of dividing or multiplying the number by a fraction.
Seems I have been given mis-information surely ?

ooh-eerrr!
sounds too complicated. Is it just 'cos they need it in km on that total distance dial bit? for WOF and stuff.

I'm not trying to throw a spanner in, but isn't it just easier to sell your car and buy another one? Not just to avoid recalibrating your dial, but since it isn't exactly a collectors item it might save you money to buy a Japanese import (available cheaply in NZ). Also, an auto box is quite pleasant on the windy NZ roads, relevant in case yours is a manual...
Oh, and from the point of view of integrating into your new home, New Zealand actually do use kilometers to measure everything...

Don't believe removals companies, speedometers can be in Kph or Mph in NZ. Of course Kph would be more useful, but then your speedo already has this anyway.
You can find all that you need from the following link:-
Importing motor vehicle into New Zealand (http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/importing/) (and links from it).
I would personnaly agree with Ourquest though, there needs to be a good reason why you would actually want to ship a car to NZ.

OK I will sell it here in the UK I think !
Sounds like too much hassle - and I will have enough to do with cleaning anything that has been outside thorough;y and varnishing any untreated wood etc !!!
cheers for your help

I imported my motorcycle from the UK with no issues; I also know of many bikes and cars here where the odomoter and speedo are just mph.
In my case the system is digital with miles and mph indicated; caused no issue with compliancing or registering in NZ. After compliance and registration I changed my speed reading to kmh but this was not possible with the odomoter and makes no difference.
In terms of cleanliness; MAF are interested in biomatter that may get in the ecology here. That means squashed bugs, cow turds, seeds and plant matter. As long as you scrub the tyres of any mud in the tread, jet wash the wheel arches and underside, wash the bodywork to clear dead-bug debris, then ensure your air-filters and A/C filters are replaced with nice clean ones they seem to be happy.
It was painless for me.

BTW Why not import your own car? According to the stats for 1998 (http://www.stats.govt.nz/analytical-reports/business-activity-1998/bus-activity-stat-1998-motor-vehicle-industry-1998.htm?print=Y) 60-70% of all new registrations in NZ were overseas imports, predominantly secondhand Japanese imports. I understand that the proportion is higher now. That being the case why not import a car you know rather than drive a secondhand imported car from Japan?

My Jag has been here nearly 3 years now so has been certified, registered and been through 5 WOF's with no problems. The speedo has K's on the inner circle but the odometer is in miles.

Something else to bear in mind (or so I have been told) is that if you haven't owned the car for 12 months than you are liable for import duty and NZ VAT. You will need a WOF and other stuff....MAF might want to get involved etc...
Not woth it, I am leaving my Mitsubishi FTO GPvR behind 'cause I have only had it 3 months....so I will have to make do with a 5.7lit V8 holden....oh dear:nice1....I am sure I can adjust.:laugh

Dom - not true. We shipped out an Audi with a speedometer with miles on the outside of the speedometer and km on the inside and that was fine, it passed all its import/registration stuff. the steam cleaning with MAF is where the fun and games starts, but it shouldn't need alternations unless it only shows miles.
was it a hassle shipping a car ? - yes, - on the flip side, we have a four wheel drive audi, that we've had from new, so know its service history. Then again, I got a lovely japanese car for me when we arrived and thats been as good as gold. I would say its if something you're very attached to/or a classic - its worth doing. (european make tend to hold their value over here), but if not - plenty of good reasonably priced cars here. We've been looking at 4 x 4's recently (need something with four doors) and even new, many makes are only 60% of the UK new price!
