I just wanted to let everyone know that MAF are realy helpful & reply to your emails ver quickly, I e mailed them on enquiry@maf.govt.nz & got an answer within 2 days.
They cleared up my question on bringing in a childs cane chair which the removals company said no to, this was their reply if it helps anyone else:
Firstly thank you for taking the time to find out about New Zealands Biosecurity regulations.
IF your cane items are coming into New Zealand in a consignment of your personal belongings there is a inspection requirement only.
If during the course of that inspection by a trained MAF Inspector insect damage or live insects are found, then fumigation may be required. Fumigation is not a forgone conclusion and is only mandatory for all commercial (for on-selling) consignments not personal.
If the cane has live insects then fumigation would be required even if you wished to destroy the goods so that the risk of live insects is mitigated. IF the cane only had insect damage then it could go straight to destruction at an approximate cost of $11.25 per item.
If the cane was fine then you get to keep it after inspection, no further requirements.
I hope this answers your enquiry, please do not hesitate to contact me if you need further information.
I almost sold my daughters chair & a few toy trollys beause of being told by removals that I couldn't take them but now I'm taking them as I don't think they would have insects, well lets hope.
I've now emailed them to ask about MAF inspections as so many of you have reported being overcharged so I'll see if I can arrange that.
