Hi,

I have read that it seems a good idea to bring a new washing machine with you rather than buying one over there. However I also have heard customs will charge you tax on goods that are under a year old. If I get one am I supposed to use it before bringing it over or something ?

Has anyone else brought a brand new washing machine over and not used it - it left it in its original state ?

cheers

we brought a new one over just got the packers to pack it in their materials:D it only needs to be used once but remember they have some water in when they are tested before been sold.(so it has been used:yes ) So I would buy a lovely front loader & not worry :D

As Jackie says, as long as it has been used then no problem, see When no customs charges apply (http://www.customs.govt.nz/travellers/Household+Effects/When+No+Customs+Charges+Apply.htm) for more details.

If you are buying new then I would check to see that it can be serviced in NZ as most european brands are not readily available.

Whenever buying any electrical goods I would recommend that you use it as much as possible for at least 24 hours if at all possible before you ship it as it is a fact of reliability that electrical items fail very quickly if they are going to fail - better to get it replaced whilst still in the country of purchase :yes

Ian Just reminded me see if you can get a Bosch as they are now over here & would help you with getting parts if ever the need arises.

Bosch it is for us as well then! We are planning to get a new washer, fridge & Freezer in the January sales (if funds permit....). Any recommendations on fridge & freezer makes to look at (where parts can be bought in NZ)?

Thanks,
Jane

A few words of caution on buying Fridge Freezers in the UK for NZ.

Most houses in NZ appear to have some form of fitted kitchen and it is normally for the thinner (standard) style fridge freezer, so if you are tempted with an 'american style' wide model it may not actually fit.

AFAIK, Fridge Freezers are set to be energy efficient in their target market e.g. differences in ambient temperatures so it is possible that it will use more electricity than one purchased in NZ.

Having said that NZ are very similar in terms of temperature range, so probably not such a big problem as moving a UK fridge somewhere much hotter?

Of course if you get a good deal or the one you are looking for then go for it (choice is generally more limited in NZ) as long as you have space in the container (we bought ours with us).

For brands, the main ones are Fisher & Pakel (?) and Westinghouse (Electrolux), but you can get others such as Samsung, LG and Mitsubishi.

We purchased a brand new Bosch washing machine before we left the UK. With the size of our kitchen and the fact I was on my own with a small child (OH already in NZ) I never got round to unpacking it and trying it out. I had planned to take the packaging off but the removal men had wrapped it up and put it on the van before I could blink! I was then way too honest for my own good and when our container arrived I declared it to MAF who promptly charged us around $145.00 GST.

The worst part of it is that its now sitting in the garage still in the packing materials the removal men put on it. :wah The gap in the laundry room where the top loader currently is isn't wide enough and I'm loath to rip out the lovely fitted cupboards that are in there. We'll probably re-jig the layout of the laundry at some point but its not on the priority list right now so for the time being my lovely front loader lives with our dishwasher in the garage.

Yep we also haven't installed our dishwasher as the fitted kitchen came complete with two F&P dishwasher drawers which I hate but thats another story! :laugh

hmmm.. we also brought out a brand new bosch washing machine in its original packing in our container. It was on our list of goods as "washing machine" - but not marked as being brand new. and MAF/Customs took no notice of it. We actually had a lot of brand new stuff which was wedding presents all in original packing and unused, and it does specifically give you an exemption for wedding presents!

Really glad we brought it, - just wish I'd brought a tumble dryer too!
