Hi All,

I just had a look over the medical forms, to see what kind of information I would need to gather for my medicals. I noticed that they ask about the health status of your immediate family. My husband was adopted and he doesn't know the health status of his biological parents (and of course the status of his adopted parents isn't relevant here). Is it acceptable to just say that he was adopted on the form? Or do we actually have to try to track the natural parents?

Thanks!
Sara

No, of course you don't need to search for birth family! (Unless he wants to for other reasons!) Noting that there is no family history because he was adopted is sufficient. If you receive an ITA, they will likely ask for some verification of having been adopted.

My daughter was adopted and they requested all kinds of verification from me (birth certificate, finalization of adoption papers, verification of name change, verification that I was indeed her parent, etc, etc, etc)

It's likely your husband won't likely have to dig these papers up but may have to come up with something verifying there is no biological family history. Because I, an adult applicant, was applying to take a child with me, they're obviously going to be pretty tight about moving kids across borders!

It certainly won't be the first time an adoptee has applied to immigrate so they're sure to have some reasonable protocol to follow. Not to worry!

I am an adoptee and it was fine to say no medical history on that section of the form. However, where I did run into trouble was when they wanted my original birth certificate. I told them since I am adopted I don't have my original birth certificate, only the one issued in my adopted name. Then they wanted the long form original of that certificate in my adopted name, but Canada doesn't issue long form certificates anymore, just the small plastic one. We went back and forth on this. I had done a birth search and had my file which had the adoption papers, the birth registration (you would have thought that would do) etc etc, but of course no original long form birth certificate.
Finally they decided to accept a notarized letter from someone who has known me 10 years (a NZer) and that was sufficient. (Although I still wonder why the word of someone who has only known me ten years would be more important that the original adoption papers etc. but whatever it was another hurdles crossed!

good luck I am sure everything will be fine.
