Hi Guys,

Haven't posted much here but just wanted to let you all know that me, my husband and 2 kids (5 and 2) arrive in Welly on Feb 8th. Am armed with the names of the 2 rental papers to check out, 2 schools to check out (and an understanding of the ratings!) and thats about it...anything else I need to know or should be advised of! Please feel free to jump in all you Welly dwellers.

thanks,

Sarah.

Don't know much about Wellington - but i do know it's a real nice city.

Good luck - enjoy the trip and keep us posted.

We arrived here (from Surrey in UK) 2 weeks ago - you're going to love it! Especially if the weather holds out! Its been gorgeous here (only had 2 rainy days since we got here!). There's loads to do for the kids - if you get a day off with them both - try Te Papa - loads of interactive stuff & there's playrooms where they can do drawings/make things.

Try the Dominion Post for rental properties Wednesday & Saturday - be forewarned that if you go to Estate Agents for rental properties that they make you drive outside them first to see if you like the look of them & then fill in some form to express interest (although we managed to bypass this with one agent) before they'll let you go around the house. However, once you've seen the house the process is really simple. They wanted to see 2 references (so bring some with you) - Ian's work references were enough for them to say that was OK as we'd never rented anywhere before.

Will you both be working? My other half is starting his job in the City on Tuesday as a Surveyor, I'm studying full-time this year so am around in the day if you fancy meeting up for a coffee - PM me when you get here if you fancy meeting up - there's nothing like being able to meet some people in your first weeks to make you feel a bit more at ease and less isolated.

Thanks Sarah. No I am not working, just my husband, he starts 1st MArch and I am hoping to have my daughter starting school then too. I would love to meet for a coffee if you know of somewhere that can put up with a rowdy 2.5yr old boy!

What are you studying this year? At college/Uni? You got the house in Whitby right? Will be in touch in a few weeks.

Thanks,

Sarah.

That sounds great, there are plenty of Kindergartens & creches for kids.

Yes we're in Whitby. I'm finishing a degree I started in the UK 4 years ago & have been doing part-time ever since - I'm doing a correspondence course from home which means I can stop for coffee whenever I want!

I'll PM you with our phone number when we get moved in next week.

Have a safe journey!

Hi Sarah,
Congratulations! Only a few more weeks! I see that you have a little boy, and if he is like every other little kid and big kid too, he'd love some icecream after that loooong flight. At the Wellington airport, look for the Kapiti icecream, it's just the best in the world! And yes, Te Papa is amazing, so much fun for all ages, your entire family will love it.
Wish I could join up with you girls, but please have a "flat white" for your eventually Wellington neighbor still stuck in California!
:cool

Brilliant Sarah, Please do PM me when you get a phone number - I am not sure how much access we will have to computers when we first arrive obviously! We leave here on the 3rd. Creeping up and SO much to do as you know I am sure!

It sounds like everyone else is up with all Welly news and places (SoCal girl? My husband was born in NoCal!) and we are going 'blind.' Could be fun. Will look out for the ice cream.

See you soon then!

Sarah.
