Another question - is it possible to start the enrollment process for schools before we go to NZ? We have a fair idea where we want to live and wondered if it was worthwhile contacting possible schools now? I know there is a zoning system in place so until we actually get a rental won't have exact location but have narrowed it down to 2 schools in North Canterbury area - unless of course I completely hate it when I get there and decide on somewhere completely different
Thanks for reading my ramblings :)

We visited several schools on a recent trip. By contacting the two schools you're considering now may even help narrow down which area you want to focus on based on conversations you have with the heads of school and materials you recieve from them. You're right - if they're zoned you can't guarantee a spot but you may be able to get an idea of how much wiggle room they have in the classes your kids would be in and get onto their wait list for the lottery draw in Jan.

Our school didn't want to know until we actually had proof of address that we lived in the zone, and then it was just a question of showing up and enroling them.
I mean, they were very nice and helpful, and answered all our questions, but also said there was no point enroling before we lived in the zone.
Not sure how it works if the school doesn't have a zone, might be different then.
Good luck,
Daniela

I had exactly the same experience.....they wouldn't accept enrollment form until we had moved from Waitakere to North shore...although school was happy for us to have a visit and look round etc.
