What's everyone planning on having?

I am clueless, we always used to have a takeout curry, but after last years food poisoning, I am NOT going down that road again..... (well not from that shop anyway!:uhoh )

The most constructive idea I have had from hubby is roast beef etc, but its too darn hot to be doing that, I can handle roasting the meat but not standing over the stove with pans of boiling veggies!

Inspiration please guys..... whats on your menu???? :cheers

Hi Sal

We are going to a kiwi house on Christmas day, they cook a turkey & bbq a pork joint, a few potatoes no gravy:wah as they have salads with it all. Last year we had a proper christmas dinner on christmas eve night & bbq on the christmas day. (but then last year was cooler than this year) hence me doing the christmas dinner in the evening & also only having been in NZ For 3 months needed the roast turkey & the trimmings :D

Defo not going to have roast dinner, none of the vegetables required are in season and it's too hot, so thinking big and really grand salad, lots of expensive french cheeses from specialist shop in Hamilton, maybe some smoked salmon, roasted tomatoes served cold with balsamic and olive oil, marinated roasted peppers, followed by strawberries with melted choc. Something like that....

I'm nipping back to the UK for a few days for full Turkey with all the extras.

We did the full Turkey thing last year and I hated it every time I had to open the oven. By the end we didn't even want it and would have rather had an ice cream!

We were going to go simple this year till the little sprogs said how excited they were about the whole roast dinner thing. So we'll go with a more simple roast beef/lamb, roast veg, yorkshire puddings etc mainly oven based and we were going to argue over who opened the oven. But I love Jackie M's idea of a Christmas Eve dinner. Not so hot, still feels Christmassy and leaves Christmas day for more important trips to the beach and playing with toys.

Jackie M - :nice1 - some rep coming your way!

Cheers

Well OH is the chef in this house and I think the menu goes something like this...

Starter - Charcuterie, olives etc.
Main - side of Salmon with almond & cranberry topping with salads and possibly some roasted Kumara
Pudding - Pavlova (cooked by me)
Possibly followed by cheeses and dessert wine

We're also going to have a ham at some point over the festive season but I'm not sure when.

We're still not sure :uhoh

OH was trying to track down a goose but unfortunately nobody seems to have one going :(

Was thinking of going with full roast turkey and all the trimmings, really got the taste for a full proper Christmas dinner but not at lunch time thinking of serving around 4pm and having a brunch in the morning.

Either that or a turkey with couscous with dried cranberries and other fruits, certainly would be more summery :)

That sounds fun! :yes

Well we will stick with our normal champers & bacon rolls for brekky.... thats been a tradition since year dot with both of us! (well obviously no champers when we were kids though :p )

I am liking the sounds of some of these ideas, but neither of us like fish, or turkey :roll . I think I will raid the deli counter for salads and roast something meaty....

I like the idea of a ham too....

Its probably about time I tried that Howick butchers!

I'm going to be in Hobart, so it will be a full on seafood feast - lots of scallops, crayfish and whatever else my brother's father-in-law (how complicated!) pulls out of the sea in the morning!
All served up with lots of salads and followed by fresh fruit - lots and lots of cherries for me.

Barbecued Sweet and Sour Pineapple Ham

Christmas at the bach? Look what’s possible with your hooded barbecue. It’s sweet and sour and simple, leaving you more time to devote to your deckchair.

Ingredients
100% New Zealand Pork Cooked Half Ham on the Bone
1/2 cup Wattie’s Ez Squeeze Sweet & Sour Sauce
3/4 tsp Chinese 5 spice
1/2 fresh pineapple, cut lengthwise and peeled (or one can pineapple slices, well drained)
12 fresh or glacé cherries

Method
1. To glaze and serve hot, carefully run your fingers under the skin of the 100% New Zealand Pork Cooked half Ham on the Bone and lift it away. Place on a rack in a foil lined-baking tray.
2. Stir the Wattie’s Ez Squeeze Sweet & Sour Sauce and Chinese 5 spice together and brush half over the ham.

3. Cut pineapple into 5mm slices and arrange pineapple slices slightly overlapping each other on the ham, securing with toothpicks. Decorate with cherries. Brush liberally with remaining glaze.

4. Pre-heat a hooded barbecue to 200oC, using indirect heat, turn off the two inside burners, leave the two outer burners on. Place the ham tray in the centre of 200oC the barbecue. Cover and return barbecue to 200oC (this will take about 15 minutes). Turn the gas down to maintain an even cooking temperature of 200 degrees C for 1 - 1 1/2 hours or until hot through to the bone.
Serve ham evenly sliced, hot or cold.

Oven Cooking Method
To Serve Cold: Bake at 180oC for 35-40 minutes, brushing with remaining glaze every 10-15 minutes.
To serve Hot: Bake at 160oC allowing 20 minutes per kilogram, brush regularly with remaining glaze, until it has all been used up.

We are still very undecided what we are going to do.

Thinking of snacking throughout the day then perhaps have the traditional lunch early evening........ thats unless i am in bed by then as my 5yr old is driving me nuts about christmas - he is more excited than ever this year!
