Hey guys

Hope this is in the right place.

We are looking to come over to Welly around about the second week of March. It will be 4 adults 1 child and a toyota hylux. I've had a quick look and the cheapest quote I can find at the moment is BlueBridge at $375 each way!!!! Has anybody done it cheaper - all advice welcome :D

ps - I have looked at flying but that would mean hiring a car and we probably wouldnt save that much money and it would be more hassle.

Cheers

Debs

We also found it relatively expensive, although if the weather is good (we were lucky to have calm in both directions) then it is one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world and worth every dollar. Bluebridge and Interislander are your only two options, and they seem to be similarly priced. We paid around $290 in April (just outside Easter) for 2 adults, 3 children and a sedan.

The cheapest way to go is off-peak when it is cheaper.

If you are only going over to Wellington for a few days it may actually work out cheaper to drop your car off at Picton and rent a car whilst in Wellington (but as you point out some additional hassle).

Another cheap option although again probably not of much use is that some rental car companies are willing for drivers to take their rental cars back from SI to NI and they pay for the ferry charges for the car and sometimes upto 2 passengers. Normally they want to go from e.g. Christchurch to Auckland but they may be open to negotiation?

Well, you did ask for any advice :D
