This has been extensively covered in older threads on this forum, do a search on GSM phones, or triband phones.
The simple answer is that A US GSM Triband, Quadband, or worldphone will work in NZ., that said it should be a 900mhz , although an 850mhz will work but coverage will be very spotty, limited to the large cities and not the entire city at that.
Provded the phone is unlocked, you can get a vodafone sim card here and off you go. Telecom does not provide sim cards for these types of phones.
