I wish we had known about this site before we booked our hire car in Melbourne. We were quite happy to pay the $28 a day hire charge for unlimited mileage, blah, blah, but we were amazed at how expensive the insurance was - $35 (ish) a day !!

No, it's not compulsory insurance, but knowing us, if we hadn't taken it something would have happened and we would have ended up paying all or part of the first $3,000 excess

We used this service last year and took a 4 berth camper from auckland to christchurch and then a week later took a 2 berth from ChCh to auckland. Ferry was paid for and we had 5 days to make each trip, which gave us some time to toodle around the south island, over to the West Coast, and check out Marlborough Sounds etc. ON the way up the north island we stayed off Highway 1 as much as poss,and took all the secondary roads, saw a lot of new country, especially liked the trip around the west side of Lake Taupo instead of the usual run along the east side.

One warning:
We had a crack on the windshield and phoned from Levin, and when we arrived in Ch Ch they had no record of the phone call, but we were able to show that the crack originated from the bottom of the window and could have been there before we took the car, so we didnt have to pay, but that is something to watch for, check the windows very carefull, especially the part at the bottom that is tinted a dark colour .

I posted a link about this service last year and I think a few people took advantage of the deals.
