Probably more of a 'Girlie' topic than for the Guys, but when I was in the UK I used to subscribe to some great magazines - 'Good Housekeeping', Woman and Home', 'She' and 'Marie Claire'.

I found them really useful, for cooking, fashion and make up tips.

Just wondered if anyone has found any good ones in NZ since they've been here?

Thats one thing I haven't yet found, is a magazine I would actually subscribe to.

I read Womans Day (don't laugh) but prob only once a month. Next magazine isn't too bad and if I buy a glossy its generally this one.

I got a few free issues of Taste magazine, but that is just recipes/cooking, but some yummy stuff in it! I find that a lot of magazines that you get here are either Aussie or US/UK imports and not that relevant. Oh, and I actually do subscribe to Little Treasures, but thats only cos of the toddler, and its really cheap!

They used to have She magazine in NZ, which was quite good, but it folded a couple of years ago.
Fashion Quarterly is ok, but most of the clothes are designer label and my budget can't always stretch that far. Simply Be is similar. (These are both NZ magazines, so almost everything featured is usually available here.)

I read a few Australian mags - Madison has some decent articles, and the fashion is more high street. Most things featured can be obtained in NZ, but I go to Oz quite frequently, so buy things I've seen that I like when over there - or if desperate over the internet.

I like Cuisine and Taste, and in Auckland I like Metro magazine. They're about the only ones I buy with any regularity.

My friend works for a picture library, so I tend to just read whatever she has lying about rather than buy any for myself. I also read all the magazines in the gym - some of them several times over!

I won a year's subscription to NZ Cuisine :raebanana and am rapt with the first mag to arrive in the mail. (probably because I never win anything....but also its a great magazine for NZ food styles!) I also like Metro, although its expensive, but I just bought the one about best places to....eat, drink, camp, hike, play, etc etc in Auckland, because it had lots of good info.

another one I like is On HOliday, about great getaways in NZ and the rest of the world. I have been thinking about subscribing to that one.

I've got a subscription to Taste, really like that one. And as I'm into gardening got a subscription to NZ Gardener.

I'm planning to take out an overseas subscription to Eve and She. I don't mind if they arrive a month late!!!

What are the Sunday glossies like in NZ? Anything comparable with the Mail on Sunday (You) or the Observer glossy?

You can get Eve magazine over here - it's about $7 per issue, which is a lot cheaper than getting a subscription, and it's only a month out of date.

I found the problem with buying European mags was that all the fashion and articles were for the wrong seasons. A bit irritating after a while, as I don't want to read about bikini diets in the middle of winter!

There are a couple of national Sunday papers - The Sunday Star Times and another tabloid, which I've never read so can't comment on. Auckland region has the Herald on Sunday, and I presume other areas also get a regional Sunday edition. Herald has lots of sections and a mag.
The magazines are a little lightweight compared to the Observer mag, but still worth a nose through. (I usually read them in a cafe over brunch or something rather than buy though, as I can't be bothered with the rest of the papers - I find the standard of reporting and journalism here quite poor.)

I love Donna Hay. It's an Aussie mag with the most incredible (and simple) recipes and suggestions for entertaining of any I've seen.

I used to splurge on it in America, but here I can get it at it's cover price of around 7 bucks. It's well worth it. :nice1

Anyone read the NZ Geographic? Is it any good?
We used to both read National Geographic and New Scientist from time to time in UK and had subscriptions to Stars at Night and BBC Gardening Magazine. I know you can get them all here, but thought it might be nice to try something a bit different.

I absolutely LOVE the Healthy Food Guide - read it from cover to cover as soon as I get it.

The Marie Claire issues are from Oz and have articles that have already been in the UK issues!!! And you don't get the freebies you get in the UK.
I looked into getting an international subscription but it would be £100+. I have been on their website and you can read most of the articles and look at fashion and beauty shoots.
I will have a read of the suggestions, but I do do miss MC.

For general interest / politics / culture (and a TV Section) you can't go past the Listener magazine. I buy it weekly rather than any of the daily newspapers here in NZ which are IMHO pretty dire.

Would probably buy the Herald on Sunday, as it's the closest I have found to a 'normal' broadsheet, but it's not available down here in Dunners - when I asked around for it the shop assistant asked me why I wanted an Auckland paper down here... well doh! Because it's a national newspaper perhaps!
the only sunday option down here, and it's rubbish but better than nothing.

None of the papers here remotely compare with the Observer on Sunday - god I miss that one a lot!!

Cuisine and Taste are probably the other two that get bought most often. The OH likes the Gourmet Traveller, especially the wine editions. I've seen Good housekeeping and the others than the OP mentions in the library. Glossies are fairly expensive here, so the library is really popular.
