Hi all
Could anyone tell me how much an eye test is & a pair of glasses (Wellington area if that makes a difference), just the cheapo frames nothing too fancy, just wondering if I need to race around & get something sorted before we come over
Thanks

Do a little search thru the archives as this topic comes up every few months...I think it's all out of pocket so if you have insurance that covers exam, frames, lenses now the general reccomendation has been to get them before leaving, if possible. But cost has been discussed in past posts.

I have just had my eyes done and purchased a new pair of frames. Eye yest was $60, and the specs $400. The frame had been reduced from $250 to $80, and lenses $320. A visit to the opticians is not a cheap affair over here, but with insurance then its a different ball game as we managed to claim 75% of it back.

I'm afraid NZ doesn't have the Specsavers variety over here.

...and check if your employer offers anything, particularly if you're a desk worker. Mine pays for annual eye tests after you've been here a year, and makes a contribution towards glasses.

I had realized that a myopia surgery would be much more expensive in NZ than here in Brazil. Not to mention that I think the doctors here have more experience with this procedure.

So I just had it and everything went well. I paid NZ$2k and don't have to wear contact lenses anymore.

It is amazing how quick and simple it was.

Hi

I work for an Optometrist and prices vary a great deal from store to store. So shop around!
Good Luck!

What insurance are people talking about?
Maybe i should get some, as i really will need new glasses soon, and in the UK mine cost £300 so hate to think what they are here! :(
(i have "complex" lens which are hugely expensive)

We have Southern Cross, which is supplied via OH's employer. She pays $52 a week for basically full cover, and it has been used to the max over the last 2 years. Four sets of glasses have been purchased, which we received 75% of costs back, along with various other medical costs.

Don't know if this is useful but found a shop in NZ that you can order your prescription glasses from if you have the prescription.
