For us that was bigger magnitude than the other big one we felt but its centre is much further away, must have seemed quite bad for you as you are much closer to it.

Just seen a news flash here in Auckland and was about to post to ask if everyone 'down there' was OK. Said there had been buildings damaged in Gisbourne, 6.8 on richter scale and 40km down, apparently it was even felt in some parts of South Auckland!
Hope everyone is OK.

Really is this the same one??
20 Dec I’m sat in Welly and we had a little shake about an hour ago. This is the first one I’ve felt in Welly (although I’ve slept through 3 in Welly in the last year)
from my experience the shakes in HB tend to be smooth, a kind of rolling motion, much slower but with much mcuh more movement. The one in welly was kind of sharp and shaky, a higher frequency but not much movement.
Is this the same shake in HB welly and auckland?

i want to say "ah, you'll be grand!" but thats de-validating your fears! im not quite sure what to say to make you not so nervous.
maybe just make yourself ready to leave quickly (get all paperwork/special things/passport/clothes etc) together so if you did need to leave quickly, you could...I dunno. Just an idea..
haha I feel a bit silly now but I know Id be worrying too.
Take care :nice1

There will probably be aftershocks at the least. They should be smaller than the big one though.

Yup, I sure did. I was in the office, her indoors was in the lounge and both of us shouted "what was THAT!" at the same time.
It's a little reminder that it's only a question of time before your are affected by an earthquake. Make sure you've all got a survival kit ready. You never know when you'll need it.

hubby felt it up here last night.
i had emails asking if we were OK as it has hit the headlines in the UK.
I was sad to see tales of attempted looting in the Herald website.
Miraculously no fatalities, a couple of broken legs were mentioned in the paper.

Just spoke with a friend who was in Gisbourne when it hit. Now he has been here 30 years and has felt the odd one, but that last night put the.....well you can imagine his language. He said when it was hitting it felt like eveything was floating, and its an experience he never wants to feel again. He was actually in his pit, as he is a trucker, so just chillin before hitting the sack. He couldn't bring himself to get out of the bed for a few seconds as no matter how much he was told as a child, he says it takes a few seconds to realise that a quake is hitting.
He's back home and trying to make sure his employer never sends him back again.
