Can anyone suggest how long to allow for this, on a typical Sunday? I know it's around 200 miles on the map, but I wondered if anyone had done this route recently?

Just did a quick look at Multimap, it suggests about 4 hours, which would have been my guess, so if you allow 5 you should have plenty of time.

Sal is probably around the mark, as Southampton Docks to Northwich is 4.5 hrs allowing for a hold up or two enroute as i have done the route on a few occasions on the trucks.

Hi Jane,
I live 10 miles from Southampton and used to have to travel to Manchester alot. 4 hours is a good guide depending upon traffic.
Don't know how many are traveling but I used to sometimes find it more cost effective to fly from Manchester to Southampton which was about a 40 minute flight.

Thanks everyone!
We are looking at the different options to get hubby & son to Southampton to catch their 'boat'. They will have heaps of luggage, so flying is not a great idea, and it looks as though hiring a car will cost about the same as going on the train! Also, since it's a Sunday, their choice of trains is limited.
Cheers!
Jane
