Congratulations!!
Had you stayed in-country the entire (I'm assuming you got in on the) 3 yrs? Or did you come and go? If you lived there part of the year, elsewhere another part of the year, was it the 240 days/yr in-country? Did you leave after you arrived on your RV or after you rec'd your IRRV?
I ask because I may be one of those who comes and goes!

Yes, I'm on the 3-year rule. I have been staying in NZ throughout the 3 years period except a total of 4 weeks family visits in 2005 and 2006. During these overseas trips, I'm on RV. I got my IRRV in March 2007.

So is it just three years here to apply for citizenship? I thought it was five years.

It is now :( The rule changed just a couple years ago - just shortly before I applied in Nov 2005. Used to be three years for those who applied before a certain date but it is, indeed, 5 years now.

Whether it's three or five years is dependent on when you obtained your NZ Permanent Residency, not when you apply for citizenship. If it was before 21 April 2005 it's 3 years, otherwise it's 5.

Is the three years the point at which you could be awarded citizenship, or the point at which you can apply? My 3 years are up on 7th March '08, and I'd like to apply now if I can.

From Department of Internal Affairs website:-
Can I apply for citizenship early (i.e. before the three or five year period of residency is up)?
It is unlikely that a grant of New Zealand citizenship would be approved if the applicant has not already met the Ordinary Residency requirements. However, there are some exceptions to this. Please contact the Citizenship Office (http://www.dia.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Citizenship-How-to-Contact-Us?OpenDocument) for more information.
But it also says that it is currently taking 8 months to process applications, so does it actually mean you can apply now but you won't actually be granted it till the actual time (at the earliest). I would do as it says and contact them to see? Note: I have linked the contact details to the quote above.

I've been reading the rules re: citizenship and didn't realise that it could take 8 months to be processed? Could you tell us how long it took your application?
It also says "You must intend, if granted New Zealand citizenship, to continue to reside in New Zealand... You must indicate on the application form whether or not you intend to continue to reside in New Zealand."
I thought you were going to the UK? or did it just take so long to process?
