One of our cats disappeared on Christmas Day. He went outside in the morning, and by bed time still wasn't home, nor did he come home the next day, nor the next day....
After he had been missing for 24 hours we were both very worried (actually, I started worrying after about 3 hours!) As I was scouring the internet for information on lost pet posters I came across this site:
http://www.petsonthenet.co.nz/
It has loads of useful information on the steps to take if your pet goes missing (most of which we had done, but it is nice to see a checklist - it makes you feel as if you are doing everything you can). You can also list a free lost pet ad (or found pet ad). But the most useful aspect of it was that it gave me hope.
Our story has a happy ending - I was woken up at half past midnight by our lost cat sitting on my head in bed! He had been gone for 2 and a half days, and we had no idea where he went, but he's home now safe and sound.

Yay to your cat being back!
When I saw the thread title, I was coming in here to post that website, I found it when I was looking for places to stay with our dog.
I also see ads on trademe too for lost cats.

jubjub, I hadn't realised there was so much other info on that site.
I am so happy my cat is back. Mainly because we missed him so much, but also because we spent so much money bringing him and his brother here!
We have given him a stern talking to - as you can see he was very contrite...

What a handsome cat! Very dapper, definitely a James Bond type by the looks of him.
So glad to read the happy ending -- whew!

What a gorgeous looking cat, and such a deep black.
I want a cat, hubby can't stand them... calls them killer animals (mind you after next door cat killing about 20 baby birds and one of the other neighbours guinea pigs, i am beginning to see his point....)

Awww, thanks everyone. I would pass the compliments onto Oscar, but he'd just become unbearably smug.
Re cats killing birds, apparently if you keep cats in at night there is less of a risk of them killing birds. I'm not sure why - is it because cats tend to hunt at night rather than during the day? Or are they just better at hunting at night because most birds are roosting? Or because they have good night vision?
Luckily, our cats are scared of everything, including birds (and rain, and wind!), so hopefully they won't become hunters now they are allowed outside. We will not be letting them out at night (we are getting a cat flap we can lock). We also know now not to let them out before we have visitors - Oscar went out in the morning on Christmas day and we then had a house full of visitors so he didn't come in all day. When they left it poured down with rain - he'd never been out in rain before so we think he got spooked and ran away.
