Hi,

I am wondering how long we have to bring in a container of furniture duty free. We got our initial RRV in 2005, and are finally ready to bring stuff over now that we know where we are going to live now that we have our permanent residency ( yeah) . We have been living in Nelson in a furnished place and are moving to Wellington because of lack of work. Does anyone know how long we can bring in an container duty free from the point we received our rrv? I seem to recall 5 years but I could be wrong. Thanks in advance-

Wendy

From the website it states "Your household or other related effects (excluding motor vehicles, boats and aircraft) will be admitted free of duty and exempt GST for a reasonable time after your arrive"

I was under the impression that it was upto 2 years after you have arrived in NZ? But don't have any information to confirm this, I also believe that the rules were changed regarding times etc in November so it is probably best to contact customs directly and confirm for yourself.

Here's the contact details you need:-

Freephone: 0800 4 CUSTOMS (0800 428 786)
Calling from overseas: 00 64 9 300 5399

Fax: 09 359 6730
Faxing from overseas: 00 64 9 359 6730

E-mail: feedback@customs.govt.nz

I was told by customs that I had up to 5 years from arriving - but for you I would say it may be from when you finally got PR, but check at your local customs office.
