Dear Anybody Out There On This Dark and Windy Night

We submitted our EOI today - hurrah - with a job offer and 200 points. I don't think we need to do an NZQA thingamy because the degree qualification is already recognised (can anyone confirm this?), and our police checks are in hand, but is there anything else we should get under way now?

My husband is due to start his new job in March - is it likely we'll be far down the road on this process by then, or are we more likely to have to wing it a bit and just go out there? Bit confused by all the various procedures and order in which things are likely to happen.

Also, we'll be looking for temporary/rented accommodation in ChCh from Feb 20th if anyone has any info/leads we can look into.

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

bean.

So you can create a thread now :laugh

Good luck with the process, one bit of advice would be to check out medical appointments now. We didnt think it would be a problem so left it till the last minute and then found that all our local panel doctors had a waiting list for a month, which delayed us from departing.

You don't actually need the medical just yet (they are only valid for 3 months) but you may want to at least book the appointment ready?

Should have said hot with glorious sunshine and clear skies in the daytime at the moment (in NZ of course), hope you don't mind me answering part of your question though :D

we can get the medical done in NZ can't we? given we're on quite a tight schedule as is, we thought we'd leave that for now if possible. it won't prevent them issuing enough paperwork for my husband to start his job will it?

You'll have to get the medical done before you come to NZ to work - all the work permits and visas require them as far as I can see, even the temporary work permit.

Sorry, your initial post was implying that you were applying for a PR before you come to NZ. If you go the PR route then you will need to take your medicals in the UK and submit them with your ITA before it will be granted and before you can go to NZ to work.

If you are well organised and your application is straightforward e.g. the details you provide are easy to confirm then you may actually be granted a PR in time.

If you don't want the medicals to be done yet, then you will need to apply for a Work Visa that is valid for a maximum of 12 months i.e. any visa longer than 12 months requires a medical.

If you choose to put off the medicals for now, be aware that if there is a medical problem then you may be declined to stay in NZ later. Also, if your visa is for less than 2 years you will not be eligible for free medical treatment if it should be needed.

Sorry, I missed that bit.

If it's for more than 6 months but less than 12 months you still need an X-ray - the form is here (http://www.immigration.govt.nz/NR/rdonlyres/4F0B1B69-EDAF-4BF5-B973-566D39BF52D3/0/1096.pdf)

Are you sure about that, from NZIS website:-

"Each applicant who intends to stay in New Zealand for more than 6 months and who has risk factors for TB is required to complete (and submit with their application) a Temporary Entry X-ray Certificate."

And

"You are considered to have risk factors for TB if you:
are not from a low TB risk country; and/or
you have spent (lived and/or visited) a combined total of 3 months or more in a country or countries not listed as a low TB risk country in the 5 years before you apply."

Where the UK is a low risk country, so I would have said that the OP probably doesn't need an x-ray certificate either, if the visa is for 12 months or less.

Ok, I'll throw this in - when we arrived on 6mth visitor visas, hubby secured a job on a 1 yr contract - we then got our work visas - valid for one year - for which he did not have to provide xrays (nor I) despite us having brought them with us from UK and they were still valid (awaiting ITA). So how does that fit?

Hmmm, I'm not completely sure, Ian, no! I can see the bit you refer to on the NZIS website, but it also says this:

Submit evidence that you meet our health requirements

The evidence that you need to supply depends on how long you intend to work in New Zealand.

Working for more than six months but less than a year

You must provide a completed Temporary Entry X-Ray Certificate (NZIS 1096) PDF [69KB].

But on the form itself it does say from low-risk countries don't require this. Sorry for any confusion I've caused.

Thanks for all that info, Ian and JoJo. Didn't mean to seem rude by not replying earlier, but I have been away for new year without internet access - nightmare! Sounds like we best get on with the medicals one way or the other. Luckily only my husband needs the xray as I'm pregnant and our son is only 1.
