Hi!
Have been reading this forum quite often lately and thought I should post my first message and introduce myself:)
Myself; Angelik, kiwi husband Anthony and our 3 kiwi/swedish kids Emma, Freja and Cornell are flying out on the 13th of Jan heading to Christchurch which we will make our home for the next 3 years.
I'm starting the speech therapy degree at Canterbury University, where my husband will work as a scientist. We are currently scoping out good areas to live, or rather trying to find a good primary school first because of the zoning...
Anyway thanks for a good forum!

Welcome Angelik to this fab forum!
We are moving to Christchurch from the UK around the same time (me, OH and two sons) and am sure someone will be along to answer your questions soon.
Enjoy your trip :D

Hej Björnsdotter,
What is the biggest difference in your opinion?
We're not completely new to nz since we lived in Palmerston north 5 years ago before coming back to Sweden, and for me the hardest thing is definitively not being able to use Swedish daily and trying to make sure that the kids don't lose the language. Other than that I love the nz lifestyle and the easy going attitude that the kiwis have!
Where in NZ are you living?

Hej Angelik,
yap, language is a b-i-g thing!
I do not live in any of the major cities so there are no scandinavians at all around where I am.
You kind of loose things that you can joke about with a scandinavian person but not a kiwi.
Not that we have different kind of humour but we can talk about things that happended on tv in scandinavia, local things.
If you just say: do you want a snail in your eye: this does not make sense to any person outside scandinavia and it was in a commercial for paying tv license. To be able to say things that triggers old memories in your native language.
I think you have an advantage with having kids since it is easier to get to know other kiwis when you have kids, I have no kids and I am no church goer and have not been kind of let in anywhere.
the large net of people that I used to have is not to be found here.
I changed from city to being rural and enjoy it totally, but it is a bit like getting "lappsjuka" when you haven't had someone except the mormons to knock on your door for the last 6-7 years.

another major thing is stuff that I can't buy here:
marabou,(chocolate) nothing compares to it!
maggie bearnie sauce, only different brown sauce altrenatives,
crayfish, the way we are use to eat them,
Shrimps, not same ones as we have,
filmjölk, use greek youhurt instead but more expensive,
kanelbullar (cinnamom buns), I can't bake with powder yeast and miss the fresh yeast,
brago biccies!
port salut cheese,
but then again if I would go back I would miss things from here! :)
