Hi all,

I've been sifting through the 'NZQA' part of the forum for a while now and I'm still a bit confused about whether or not I need to have my qualifications assessed.

We're going for the lets-go-there-and-see-what-happens route, trying to find a job and worry about EOIs and ITAs later (if at all).

Do I need my quals assessed when taking this route?

The NZQA form uses the word 'may' a lot and refers to points for a EOI mostly, so that's no big help. It just adds to the confusion...

The only question (and answer) I could find was this one:
http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10900
Which says I don't need it for a work permit, but I'd like to be a bit more confident about this.

Thanks,

Peter.

I have had a look at NZIS's policy in an attempt to find your answer. Certainly no mention is made of NZQA, and so it is not necessarily a requirement to have your qualification assessed (I am referring only to work permits here), however, one of NZIS's requirements for issuing a permit is that they are satisfied that you are suitably qualified or have the experience to perform the job for which the application is made. This latter point essentially means that they could ask you for an assessment if they felt it necessary.
So no, you don't seem to need it to apply but you might be asked to get it.

If you want to do your own reading have a look at www.immigration.govt.nz and click on "our policy manuals" to the left and open the "temporary entry" pdf. Work permits are covered from about page 200.

I hope this helps.:)

One other point to note about NZQA, is that for certain jobs it is a requirement to have your qualifications assessed by NZQA regardless of whether you would need it for NZIS.

So depending on the employment that you do, you may require NZQA regardless.

It does, thanks for the speedy replies. All in all, I think I will prepare for the worst and get all my paperwork ready for fast tracking.

Finding my secondary school grades is going to be a bit of an expedition though...
